How much can I get the VS 2008 Enterprise Edition for and where?

My manager just told me to find out and he needed a rough estimate and licensing issues.

Even VS 2010 should do.

Contact eshopper.co.za or digitalplanet.co.za for a quotation. Tip: The least expensive way is to buy VS 2010 Professional Upgrade, that is if you don't need the additional features of Premium or Ultimate. Eshopper has the upgrade for R4 006.01.
To qualify for upgrade pricing, you must be a licensed user of one of the following products: an earlier version of Microsoft Visual Studio, or any other developer tool (including free developer tools, such as Visual Studio Express Editions or Eclipse).

How can you be a licensed user of Eclipse? So if you have a free IDE you qualify to buy an "upgrade" to Visual Studio? Very strange indeed.

It looks like my boss decided to do it himself. Other departments have a limited Professional licenses. So I told him to contact them.
Apparently the company cancelled most MS licences and they are going open source . Well they have been going open source for some time.

Strange but true, no one in their right mind will buy the full version, only if you don't know about the qualifying options I suppose... I guess the "licensed user" term refers to whatever it take to be a licensed user of VS Express (register) or Eclipse (accept the os license).

Nothing you can do about it then, management decided ;0) I'll rather eat my lappy before I switch back from VS to Eclipse again... < active flame shield/>

Awesome. Gotta get me one of those... :D

What are you coding, in general? Windows or Web?

My bread and butter consist of a concoction of older web/desktop technologies (One man’s crappy software is another man’s full time job ;0). I'm using VS to learn XAML/Silverlight, my last project was in 2004 using WinForms, so it's quite a challenge and high learning curve...

I've used Visual Studio quite a lot in the past, from 2003 up to 2008 (haven't used 2010 so can't comment) however I'm now working in Eclipse. Considering I still do some work in Visual Studio 2008, I must admit that Eclipse has some really nice features that make life a lot easier. Might not have the best layout or interface in terms of ease-of-use and learning ability but in terms of productivity, it makes a big difference having features like Call and Type Hierarchy, Quick Outline and Open Type (and In Hierarchy). This is especially important in large code bases or when working on a new project.

< bow to master/> I must amid to not being an expert, Eclipse is also very useful when you work in a mixed environment such as Flex/PHP/JavaScript. On the other hand, in VS I've quickly become addicted to the myriad of add-ons available for refractoring, code formatting etc. Much a matter of horses for courses ;0)
