Vlc and poor sound quality

When streaming movies over the network(or watching the movie directly on the pc) the sound when people talk is not always crisp when they are shouting or if there is background sound.

Using vlc, running sound directly to amp over hdmi ( which also automatically detects sound and what setting to use, which it's not)
Movies are Mkv, normally hd
Any ideas what setting it could be? Tried pot player and it's fine, but don't like the interface as much.

weird, vlc always had good quality sound, my speakers can't keep up and I don't have it over hdmi
