Okay, this is weird. Just uninstalled and reloaded VLC (new version as well) to try overcome this issue but I dunno whats wrong.

The program seems to lose focus.

Cant click like any options. I semi regain focus by pressing alt but lots of things still doesnt work and I cant manage to keep focus.

Why cant I click things etc etc? It also sometimes fixes certain situations if I click vlc in the task bar. but still.. things are still broken?

Whats up with VLC?

Okies, so nobody has any clue why my media player isnt working? :(

Clean out your c:\documents and settings\user\application data\videolan folders after you uninstall it. There is another folder possibly under c:\documents and settings\user\local settings\application data\videolan. It's either both or one of them.

Strange. I deleted those folders.. wasnt videolan, was just vlc.

Still did the same thing after reisntall :( - think im gonna have to reload Windows to fix VLC. eh :(

Cant really post a screenshot because it wont show anything.

The program still opens and displays perfectly, but the different clickable areas work and stop working. (None of the areas work at the same time).

One thing that ever works is if I am playing a video I cannot at all click on the progress bar of the video. i.e cant skip forwards or backwards.

If the volume controller is working on VLC then clicking on the stop button for example in VLC will make the sound bar go to 0.

As if its reading the entire bottom section of VLC for the sound at that point. Anything left of the bar will make the sound 0. Anything towards the right of the sound controller will make it max. Usually you need to click on the sound controller itself to change it.

If the stop/play button is working then even clicking directly on the sound controller wont change it.

Right now I cant even drag the window anywhere. its stuck on my screen. I have to close it using right click close on my tasbar. Alt tab brings it into focus again, and alt will make me be able to use the top menus again. Like media audio.. etc.

Its just very weird that only VLC is doing it. ive got no idea what changed cause this just started happening yesterday.

Its as if some hidden always ontop feature is broken so there is an invisible window over everything all the time. Very strange. :/

Im using media player classic atm, which is okay, but I still like VLC :( just cant explain what would cause it to become totally unresponsive.

As said before I can still watch anything in it etc. Still works, its just the user interface which has become unclickable.

I'm having problems with a few different video players on my system including VLC. I have a sneaking feeling there might be a trojan but I'm a bit lazy to reinstall Kaspersky and do a full scan. You might want to look at that though.

Ive got Avast installed. Will try a full scan. See what happens.

As Merc said - Kaspersky found mine very well but otherwise my experience with them has been pretty lousy.

nod32 or f-secure should sort u out, never heard of this problem though....

Had this problem once that my menu's don't want to respond, but not the loose focus one.
It turned out I had to many codec and players installed. Uninstalled a few and somewhere I got a codec repair program and it fixed one codec that was corrupt and after that vlc player was great again.

wow that worked!

I removed the XP Codec Pack from my machine. and VLC started working again.. o.O - Ive had the XP Codec Pack isntalled for ages though! weird.
