I recently started using VLC and quite like it. But when I try to watch something through my laptop on my tv, it doesn't display properly. The sound is fine and it even shows the VLC application but not the movie. The same file works perfectly through Windows Media Player though. I couldn't find a setting that sorts this out. Any suggestions?

change the resolution of your LCD screen to 800x600 or lower

There is a setting on your display properties that says which monitor to display the video on.
Most laptops are not "strong" enough to display video on both.

I have v0.9.8. which I thought was the latest. But see 0.9.9 is now available. Will give it a go.

Yes, I know... But the Xbox stole the spare cashI only put it on tv, not both. So don't think it relates to the laptop itself

...sorry I was not clear on what I meant, see if changing the resolution of your laptop's LCD or the resolution of the cloned output makes a difference.

VLC I installed the latest version but I haven't had a chance to see if it makes a difference yet.

Ive also struggled with this a bit in the past - setting it up to only have one display on the screen u want to view seemed to work for me. Might be a stupid setting somwhere or something we're not thinking of but im generally impatient and just single displayed it 
Yip, this did the trick. Fanks for the tip Myzer. The video output is set to "default" and I changed it to "openGL"

Yes but I think that its still seeing your TV as a secondary display
