If this free internet is a promotion then I am not impressed. I can hardly get on with my SE T630.
sometimes the network is down and does not allow me to log on at all, other times it stays connected for a mere 30 seconds and after about 2 MB of traffic it freezes.....
MXIT does not work on the VM network so they have totaly excluded them selves from the younger generations shopping list.
I find my self switching off my VM connection and using my MTN connection rather.
Guess you pay for reliability .....
if VM wants us to do the move then they had better put in a bit more effort into improving the service or at least putting a bit more heat under their service providers.

Not sure what the problem might be for you, but one of my friends recently changed to VM. He has been happily using the internet on his VM cellphone

Cell c is busy upgrade their system so there will be problem with VM but my one work perfect. Also Mxit works only with some phone with VM.

Works likes a charm for me! Although my Nokia 6610 reboots itself, at random, whenever hooked up to the cellc network. Hey, it's cheap/basically free so stick it somewhere else if you don't like the service.

nelspruit area

I'm not the only one to complain about the connection in the Nelspruit area.
I have even put a VM card in my T610 and T630, connected them to two separate laptops and started a dload of about 40 Meg.
Both come to a grinding halt at the same time. It seems as though the network just can’t cut it.
As for it being cheap/virtually free it’s like having free fuel and a broken down car that comes to a grinding hault every 20 Km
I connected in Springs last week and had pretty much the same experience.

VM Works like a dream on Motorola V360

On the SE phones It seems to have a problem but then again SE 610, SE 630, SE T68, SE V600i give problems even on Vodacom. Freeze up. MixIt on Motorola V360 works like a dream. Remember that the APN for VM is VDATA and not INTERNET.

i also find the VM data network unreliable. most of the time, i stay connected for hours, sometimes i can't connect though.

I'm happily using VM! the basically free GPRS is quite nice :)
And i use mxit and opera mini on both of my phones (sony ericsson k750 and k700) on VM no problem

When they are up I am very happy. It is all I need. I like the price and the speed is good. I really hope that they finish their upgrade soon. All I want is a service that is up most of the time. I think that they could kill if they could just get the reliability right...

I agree - I have had mine from the time they started - I had some problems- but has found that the service improved over the last two months- If it keeps improving, they can clean up- I use about a R100 a month and download and upload huge files daily. No problem accessing any sites and use mxit as well.

yip the service is improved

some improvement

well last night I managed to stay logged on for about 4 hours and did a 55 meg dload from microsoft without dropping the connection once.
the average GPRS speeds were in the 4kb/sec range.
as I have always said I do not realy need broadband, just a reliable data connection of 3-8 kb/sec and I am a happy chappie.
at least they are giving us free internet while in the teething phase.

Snowy, it's maybe because you're in the middle of nowhere and things tend to happen a wee bit slow there. You guys will probably only get 3G/HSDPA in 2012, that is if you're lucky.

Any way, back to the topic. Yes VM data does seem to be very unreliable. Sometimes the connection is nice, nice speeds. And then the next day, simply nothing seems to happen. They really have to get their ducks in a row. Their rates are cheap, but these problems are not nice for the guy who needs a reliable, dependable connection. Like you mentioned above, it's no use getting cheap or free petrol, but then it takes you two weeks (with countless fuel supply problems) to get from Jo'burg to Cape Town!

thanks VM

2012 !!! well at least they brought the dead line 10 years forward !!!!!
thats why I make a noise here... it seems as though things happen. if I didn't say anything then the SP's will just sit back and think all is well in backwards land (Nelspruit and co.)

when I had my MTN connection the service was very poor, MTNDUDE did something about it, I take my hat off to service like that....albeit a very expesive alternative @ R2 a meg.
yes VM is cheap and yes I do have auto redial activated and yes sometimes I stay connected for hours at a time but I know that the system can improve and I thank VM for the steps in the right direction to bring an affordable and hopefuly reliable connection to us south africans.
