A quick one for those in the know...

Can I do an in-place licence upgrade of stand-alone ESXi Bare-metal Hypervisor servers to the big-boy version to allow for clustering, etc. without having to re-install the host? I suspect not, but figured I'd ask.

I am pitching a POC and I need to know what I can expect down the line if it's successful.

Thanks

I used to work on VMware licensing a few years ago. As far as i know you can, provided you have the latest ESXi installed. ESXi is a complete product (commodity) with all components installed. The Enterprise license just unlocks additional functionality and can be controlled from the vCenter which can be installed as a stand alone or as a VM. Just make sure to read up on networking best practices assuming you are working in a multi-node cluster.

You can call VMware JHB on +27 11 513 4800 if you need confirmation.

Thanks. Yeah I'm sorted on the design side of things, just stupid when it comes with the licensing.

Thanks a million guys.

We are in essence a Hyper-V house (and quite happy with it). This is for a very specific set of virtual appliances for which the certification on Hyper-V is not yet finalized, so we are forced to go the VMware route from a supportability point of view.
