They say you need to be a Vodacom customer to obtain their insurance. can I just buy a Vodacom sim and use that for the number for insurance purposes? Or does the sim have to be in the phone at all times?

I'm currently with mtn and they only offer it if the device is not older than 14 days.

Damn you autocorrect

You have to use the SIM in the device permanently for a start.

Do you not have home content insurance perhaps? My phone is specified on there and they paid for my R3249 repair (minus the R350 excess).

Will they even be able to confirm this?

I see telkom has a similar clause that says the sim has to be the last used in the device.

Unfortunately do not have contents or car insurance

Simple they just look up the sim number and compare it to the imei number. You could just change the imei number on the device being used through engineering mode if your device supports it.

The OP wants to get a device from MTN and then insert a Vodacom sim. The OP wants the device insured through Vodacom because the device is older than 14 day?

Just for the record, if you get a device as part of a contract, you DO NOT own that device. The network specifies in the contract that the device remains their property during the initial period. They will charge you a device fee NOT an installment (not like a HP where you get some ownership). They will give you the device at the end of the contract rather than recover it.

The sim that has got the insurance loaded must be in use inside the phone you want to insure. If not, the claim will be rejected......and yes, they do enforce this policy. I have had a few of these. A few of them being where someone lent their phone to a friend/family member, the phone is stolen and then it is found that the sim with the insurance was not inside the phone and the claim is rejected.

I buy my devices cash and am looking for a standalone insurance policy.

Vodafone at R50 for R10k accident liability is very very decent.

Next time I need to get a dual sim phone

Mtn only gives you insurance of you take the device with them and apply within 14days.

No idea on cost

Does anyone know if Vodacom insurance pays out what a device is worth at the time of claiming or what it was worth at the time of the policy being activated ?
