Hi all: I've always just went for the phone I wanted and got whatever package was appropriate, but I'm sitting with a bit of an issue at the moment, and I hope that someone can give me a bit of direction.

1. My dad has a contract phone with Vodacom: It's expiring soon, and after a lot of discussion, it seems that Blackberry is the only real option that will work for him. Now the problem: He can buy the rest of his contract for something like R 280, but he can't convert to a Blackberry and keep his number. As this is a business number more often than not, this is not an option. Though very friendly, the lady that tried to assist couldn't: At this stage the only option is to go to MTN or CellC where they keep your number. Now how is this possible? How can with a normal contract upgrade, after years of paid service, it not be possible to retain the number?

2. Then I need an 'emergency' phone. Or more specifically, I am looking at getting a contract with defined limits: I'll be paying for the contract, but somebody else will be using it. I need the user to have some indication when they reach their limit: I, for example, would only pay R200 a month for the phone: any additional calls needs to be 'manually' topped up. Is this possible, are there any contracts in this line? It's a bit like having a sales rep, where you pay a bit of their phone bill ...

Anyway: I would have preferred contacting somebody at Vodacom directly, but after spending the good part of an hour on their site I've given up trying to find a sales contact.

Any info would really be appreciated: The emergency phone I reckon we can figure out in a few ways, but I would really like to go back to my dad and tell him: no worries ...

I dont understand the first part of your message. You say he wants to buy out his contract, convert to a Blackberry but cant keep the number? Is he not upgrading? Please elaborate more as to what he wants to do specifically.

As to your emergency phone....You might want to consider a Top Up contract. You get a phone, airtime (the amount depends on what Top Up package you take), and if it gets finished before the end of the month you can top up with prepaid airtime.

You can go here to see the deals:

Thanks oc.

His contract will expire in September I think, or come up for renewal in September anyway, and as I understand it, early renewal, or buying out the rest of the contract will only cost R280.

It seems the problem is more with the contract types: He is probably on a Business Call type contract, and would ideally go over to some type of Call 120 package -- He does not closely use the talk time he currently gets.

So my understanding is: No problem with early renewal. No problem with Black Berry. Can't convert Contract A to Contract B - BIS and keep the number.

PM me the number...let me have a peeka boo for yoo.

I just went from an iphone to blackberry contract with BIS and kept my number, standard upgrade process. OC should b able to sort you out though :)

Hello Bin. My appologies for taking so long to get back....went to bed early last night and this morning has just been crazy munky stuff!

Anyways...the number you gave will be due for upgrade 2011-09-02. Due to the ave spend not being high enough, a prem upgrade will not be allowed. There is no reason why you can not have the BIS service bolted onto the contract now as is, but the concern is that you obviously need a Blackberry to use with it. Perhaps look for a cheapie...new in stores or second hand etc.

You can migrate this line to prepaid and effectively buy out the remaining contract.....but the last time someone wanted to do this, Vodacom said that you have to wait between 3 - 6 months before you can convert it back into a contract again. By the time this waiting period is over, you will be eligible for the actual upgrade anyway.

Not much help I know...but that is how it works...dont ask me why. :-(

Regards:
OC

Thanks OC !

Much appreciated. At least i know where we stand now and can make a plan.

Thanks !

You can consider getting the Red Blackberry deal on topup 135 for R129 pm for the emergency phone, give the phone to you dad and let him ad BIS till his upgrade is due. Then use his current phone for the TopUp contract.

That way your dad can see if he like BB, you get the cheapest TopUp 135 deal on the market (with free BIS)

Oc - would you care to elaborate on this a bit? How does prem upgrade work? What is the required average spend?

R800 or more....or you must be on the Talk 500 or Talk 1000. Which ever is applicable to you. If you dont meet one of those criteria, a prem upgrade is not allowed.

Thanks. After how many months can one look at prem upgrade then, assuming you qualify for the rest?

Dont quote me....I cant remember exactly. We got a memo a long time regarding this matter....we now just check on the system if you qualify as they system will check that you meet the criteria...if computer says no...then it is no. :-)

I think it is month 18 that you qualify for a prem upgrade provided you meet the criteria.
