I got a call yesterday saying I can upgrade now, very nice lady on the other side of the phone. She was not too pushy and when I explained that I am waiting until February when I can cancel my contract and downgrade to prepaid as I plan to be using Rain LTE primarily and only using my Vodacom SIM for the odd voice call I receive.

Now here is where she made the only mistake by either being honestly not clued up - or just spreading FUD : "Sir, you know on Rain Mobile there is no data between 6pm and 11pm. The network only runs outside those hours."

This has me a bit riled up so I told her that is on the unlimited data package and even if you do have that you can still use data in that time on the normal R50 per GB rate. Not that it would apply to me, I use about 500mb a month so my Rain bill will be about R25 a month. A far cry from the Top-up 215 I am on now and never even use the airtime.

Anyone else had similar upgrade/retention experiences? Good or bad?

Vocacom retentions gave an contract upgrade offer, my monthly payment went up by about R30, but they included an additional 2GB of monthly data to sweeten the deal.

I'm on a Topup 375 or something. Last year they called and offered me the same deal with an extra 5GB a month.

I called Vodacom retentions - 0821984 - last year. Also said I wanted to go prepaid. Ended up getting 1 Gb data, 60 minutes talk time and CLIP for R44pm for 2 years, Vat Inclusive. Hoping to repeat the deal for another 2 years in March. Trick is to dig your heels in, and they will do (almost) anything to keep you on a contract as a customer.

I have received SMS since my contract 'ended' last December but no phone calls that I can remember. I pay for air time every month, use some of it for a few calls, buy some data and that is it. My current phone will need a new battery soon but will stay with me for as long as possible.

Yeah, canceled by VodaKACK contract, and they tried to convince me to stay, saying that they will try to match the Telkom 20G special. Told them TSEK.
Telkom?! Hellz no - they are evil to the core. I just like the flexibility Rain gives me and I'll fall back on Vodacom whenever there is no Rain coverage or I need to make a voice call.

I got my Vodacom number in 1999 when I was in matric, so I've had it for more than half my live.

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA., you should have told them about the "Out of Bundle" concept to see how they react

Had mine since 1996 - I think the longevity of your customer status with Vodacom would play a large part in how sweet a deal they offer to keep you.

Wondering, I had a MTN number for about 20odd years.. long story short, number became prepaid and then was "cancelled" / released back into the pool.
Calling it now, goes nowhere.. wonder what the chances are to ask them to get the number back for me.. ?
Maybe ported to Vodacom...

I upgraded 4 contracts with Vodacom 2 years ago via retention they offered me 2GB free per contract they were all smart S+ for a good price. I scored when they screwed up the upgrades and threatened to cancel all my contracts they changed the 2GB to 5GB for 24 months. When I tried to upgrade last month they said they can not do the free data and can give me 50% off. I laughed at the price it was double what I currently pay. They then upped the discount to 75% but the prices are still mad. I will have to try again if they are doing the free data again.

This is for my mobile phone. 4500 mins per month, 20Gb data that can roll over for two months, unlimited WhatsApp/YouTube. I have no problem.
