Vodacom DNS addresses

Hi,

I got myself a PS3 and connected it to my router. I connect to the net with my Vodacom 3G card on my laptop(also connected to the router). So then I could browse websites on my PS3 and download stuff etc. But when I tried to register the PS3 with its built in function I get "could not connect to server" errors. So I found out from various other PS3 sources on the net that it is a DNS problem. So I think I need to get the DNS addresses for Vodacom and put them in the settings of the PS3, or maybe the laptop somewhere?? I don't know. If anybody can help me, I would appreciate it :(

Nope, what you need to do, is use your 3G router as a DNS server for your PS3, so put the router's IP address into the PS3's setting for DNS server.

PS: Welcome to MyBroadband :).

Thank you so much, I feel welcome already!

I want to do what you said but I am not sure how. Let me explain my setup to you.

My 3G card is connected to my laptop with PCMCIA (not a router). But then the laptop is connected to Linksys WRT54G wireless router via ethernet. The PS3 is connected wirelessly to the same router. My router is set up as a DHCP forwarder to the DHCP server (my laptop). My laptop is the DHCP server becasue I set up Internet Connection Sharing on the 3G dial up connection on the laptop. So the PS3 gets it's IP address from the laptop, and then utilizes the dial-up 3G connection on the laptop to access the internet. Ok so do I put in the playstation settings the laptop's IP address or the router IP address?

Maybe I should get myself a 3G router... I am just so frustrated.

By the way, I have also tried making the Linksys the DHCP server and let the laptop and ps3 get their IP's from the router. Then when I connect to the 3G internet with the laptop I could not browse the net on the ps3 unless I set up a proxy server on the laptop and set it up in the ps3, but still no registraion on PSN (Playstation Network). Maybe I should do this again and put in the ps3 settings the router IP as the DNS. I wil try it agian with the DNS.

Thanks soooooo much for the help :D

Hmmm, ok I had assumed you were using a Linksys WRT54G3G router with your 3G card plugged directly into the router, since that isn't the case, the easiest is to use the IP address of your laptop that is acting as a router via Windoze ICS, so try putting 192.168.0.1 into the PS3's DNS setting and see if that works...

There is also another possibility - you are probably using the default internet APN when connecting to Vodacom's 3G network, the PS3 might need a publicly routable IP address via the internetvpn APN, in which case you would need to call 155 and get them to activate the internetvpn APN on your SIM card, but try the 192.168.0.1 DNS setting first.

I thought the APN might be the problem. I am going to change to internetvpn and see if that works. I am now at work and I will let you know tonight when I get home

You have been a great help. Thanks

Ok, so I tried everything I could. Converted to internetvpn, setup the router dns's, tried the dns settings on the ps3. Nothing works. Even my other pc's on the network won't connect on the net.

I am just so fed up with it. I might just get ADSL or something.

Thanks again

Not sure if it'll help, but I've got the following setup:
Xbo360 connected by cable to a Windows Media Centre PC.
Windows Media Centre PC connect by WiFi to Wireless Access Point router.
Wireless Access Point router connected by cable to Desktop PC.
Desktop PC connected via HSDPA (internet apn) to Internet.

I've had no problems connecting the XBox to the internet and even play online games, but I had to put the Vodacom DNS ip addresses (ipconfig /all)on the XBox and make the Media Centre PC the default gateway for the XBox.
Also, make sure your PC's firewall is not dropping the connection from your PS3.

It's definitely something to do with the networking setup, and as easy as Windoze ICS is to enable, Windoze ICS is quite a primitive router implementation, but if you can find a way of getting it to work with your PS3 then you won't need to wait for several months to get ADSL and discover you have the same problem you had with 3G.

What networking tools or diagnostic info does the PS3 provide you with? - maybe have a look at the PS3's network config - the PS3 equivalent of ipconfig /all.

Ok, I will try that. I was thinking this might be the problem as the ps3 bitches and moans about DNS errors all the time. By the way what settings do you have on your router?

Thanks

The ps3 has something like this. But you can manually enter the following or you can choose automatically detect, just like Windows:

IP Address
Subnet Mask
Default Router IP
Primary DNS
Secondary DNS

Then it has settings about MTU, UPNP and Proxy Server.

I have set up a proxy server on my laptop and set it up in the ps3 which lets me browse websites on the ps3, but not anything else like registering on the playstation network to play online. By the way the only way I can browse sites is with the proxy set up. But last night I tried to leave out the proxy and get it working with ICS, but no luck. Also none of the PC's conneted to my router can access the shared connection on my laptop. I dont have a firewall on my laptop, only windows firewall and it is turned off

I have also tried the link below, and it seems to work, because when I ping www.google.com from the ps3, it resolves the IP address, but returns unreachable or something like that, and the ps3 still says DNS error when trying to connect to www.google.com in the ps3 web browser:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Sharing_Dialup

If the hostname resolves to an IP address then DNS is ok, but when you get an unreachable error that indicates a routing problem - probably the default gateway is incorrect.

Maybe best to do an ipconfig /all on the notebook and post that info [remove MAC addresses and any other info like hostname that we don't need to see], post similar info that the PS3 is configured with.

The router I have is just a simple Wifi Access Point (with web-based config).
What I did on the router was disable NAT, disable Firewall and disable DNS proxy (rather manually configure vodacoms DNS servers).

Your setup is: 3G Datacard<->Laptop<->Router<->PS3 (right?)
Is it possible to try?: 3G Datacard<->Laptop<->PS3

A sniffer trace on your laptop could also be useful.

Hi Guys i am new on the forum, i have a laptop with hsdpa built in i am trying to connect my ps3 up to it,but do not understand routers and proxys. My ip address succeeds but the gives me a message that reads...dns error what the heck is that, and what is dhcp,if i do ipconfig/all it states dhcp is off would that make a difference

Connect PS3 via PC to Internet with ICS

Hi Guys

I managed to connect my PS3 via wired connection to my Laptop runnig Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) using GPRS to the internet.

This how I did it:

1: Set your Laptop/PC Network Adaptor ip to 192.168.0.1 or xxx.xxx.xxx.1 and subnet 255.255.255.0
2: Go to your Laptop/PC INTERNET CONNECTION under Network Connections in Control Panel => Properties
=> Advandced Tab => CHECK the checkbox to allow other nework users to connect through this computer
=> SELECT your Network Adaptor connected to your PS3 in the drop down list and click OK.

3: Connect to the Internet & make sure you are connected
=> Click Start => Run => Type "CMD" & Enter (or Command Promp / Dosbox)
=> Type "Ipconfig /all" & hit enter
=> In the list search for your Internet Connection & get the DNS Server IP, there is usually 2 of them
=> Write them down (Your Ps3 will need them)

4: PS3 select Internet Connection Setup/Configuration
=> Select your type of connection (wired/wireless)
=> Manual configuration & go to the IP setup Screen
=> Change your PS3 ip to 192.168.0.2 or xxx.xxx.xxx.2 (Do not change it to xxx.xxx.xxx.1) & subnet 255.255.255.0
=> Default Gateway to 192.168.0.1 or to whatever your Laptop/Pc ip is
=> Now enter the DNS server IP info from step 3
=> Do not enable Proxy server for this setup
=> Go to Accecpt settings & test connection

5: Your Ps3 may need a Firmware update once it connects, (+- 115Mb Download)
