Short story - in the USA people use SMS to chat to each other. iPhone users have full on conversations using iMessage, which Android users didn't have. Google was jealous, and wanted to do the same as iPhone. Didn't work as carriers don't like intercompatibility, and like walled gardens. (plus apple said **** right off).

In every other country, people don't bother with carrier based SMS for chatting, and use either Whatsapp, Wechat, or some sort of regional chat like Line, so its not really an issue people outside of the US want solved, as its irrelevant for most. Carriers are quite aware of that, so not much effort was put into RCS, and RCS wasn't that interoperable anyway, so its been dead in the water for a few years now. Slight business use of RCS, but overall a complete and utter failure imho.

So download Google Messages.

Didn't even know Android phones these days didn't come with it as standard.
