Vodacom Fibre

Vodacom pitched their fibre offering to my estate yesterday.

Currently only the following 3 packages are offered:
1. Silver - 20Mbs line with 50gig data - R799
2. Gold - 40Mbs line with 100gig data - R1199
3. Platinum - 100Mbs line with 200gig data - R1799

All packages are soft capped. Line speed will reduce to 10% once soft cap is reached.
24 month contracts

That is way too much. Business fibre?

It's Summerfields Estate in Samrand.
They were supposed to also pitch to Brooklands Lifestyle Estate. Not sure if they did as yet.

Vodacom are pitching to my estate as well but I haven't received pricing.
If I push crazy data, then being softcapped to 10mbps isnt too bad on the 100mbps package.

Do you know if their network is open access so that other ISP's can offer their services?
I have to wait till the 14th to find out more info at their presentation.

I agree, being soft capped to 10mbs would be fine.
However, they did mention fair use policies do apply.
They would have to clarify what is deemed as fair use. 200gig, 300gig, etc?

There was mention of other providers coming in. At this stage they did not have additional information on who and how it would work. If you can get some information on this, I would appreciate it.

I will talk to them this saturday as that is when they are making themselves available to discuss.
Will provide feedback when I have.

Ok I got some more info.
The lines are asymetrical with upload 50% of the download ie 100mbps down 50mbps up
Once you reach your cap, the soft cap speed varies from 10%-100% based on network demand/contention.
Apparently there is no fair usage policy because of the throttling.
Also if the pricing comes down we get the new pricing even if we signed at the initial startup ie contract lock is for duration of service but the price isn't fixed.
You can upgrade immediately but have to give calendar month to downgrade.

With the new fibrehood pricing showing up on mybroadband, im hoping Vodacom will drop their pricing as we go along.
Its expensive relative to other neighbourhood fibre offerings but hopefully pricing will come down as uptake increases.

The network is open but the ISP would have to rent the line from Vodacom and that was all the information the Vodacom guy had for me regarding open access.

Thanks for the info.
I'm also hoping the pricing improves after seeing the other offers.

Vodacom is also pitching to my complex next week (Aquila - Fourways).

Looking at the pricing, I would much rather go for 20 / 40 uncapped rather than 100Mb / 200Gb. However, if the throttling is max 10%, i suppose its not really that bad. Ie - going for a 100Mb line , down to 10Mb.

Had a look at their presentation PDF file, and there seems to be alot of examples of Vodacom as a content provider. There are screens where you can stream movies from Vodacom via one of their devices. Now the question becomes, if I stream an HD movie, does that count towards my cap? If so, 50/100/200Gb is definitely not sufficient!

I think the sales guy said it doesnt count towards your cap but if you can find out it would be great.
He pitched their future VOD services but I wasnt very interested. If I remember correctly, it sounded like you can choose what you want, so you pay for HBO, then pay for Netflix, etc. So it isnt just a single monthly fee for the entire vodacom vod service.
Out of bundle rates are R7/GB but thats if you want full speed. If you happy with throttling you dont have to do out of bundle.

Hey KillerX

Did you manage to find out any details to the video streaming? or anything else which could be con. Since things that sound to good to be true. Tend be to be.

Just spoke to the Vodacom guy pitching to my complex (they're doing all the Summercon places it seems). Can confirm all that is said above and here's all the extra information I managed to get :)

He said all the local VOD services will not count towards your cap. I also told him their prices were expensive compared to the other offerings. Was trying to explain to him that at R1199 I'd be getting the same speed but half the cap (6x the upload speed I suppose) and that 100gb just wouldn't be enough. They're working on the notion on the average user though so to the average user 100gb is like uncapped. He did say there was a price drop of 20-30% coming in the next 2 months with further decreases coming later and also gave mention that Vodacom were willing to beat or at least match the other Fibre prices if you approach them with it (not entire sure how well that would work :p)

Eventually I just referred him to read the articles on the forums about all the different prices that are out there so they can compare >.<

To add to the open access he said Vodacom will probably keep it closed for the 1st year and then afterwards they'll open it up so you can use other ISPs.

And just some additional information. The guy I spoke to was actually from FibreConnect. They're apparently the 1's laying all their fibre. He said that if we were able to get our 40% interest then we could have it all installed by around May. In terms of funding apparently Vodafone UK gave them something like R48 billion to drive the initiative and get it going.

Thanks for the info. Is your complex managed by Yvonne Nathan?

Yup. Although she could have sent out a better email about the Vodacom guys. All the emails we got from her told us all to meet them at our clubhouse between 9 and 1. So I kept walking down and finding Vodacom flags but no one in sight. Ended up finding them outside the complex on the road >.<

Mine was ok. 3 guys were at the clubhouse with 1 guy at the gate to notify residents of what was happening.
In general Yvonne Nathan emails frustrate me but it probably varies complex to complex.
