I got called by Vodacom Direct I think in August 2010 to offer me a R75 top up contract for R45 a month (no device included). I took it because it was all I needed and suited my needs perfectly.

On Thursday they called to tell me my contract was due for upgrade and they had various options to offer me. When I told the guy I may as well wait until my 24 months was up before selecting an option (the closest equivalent was more than my current R45 a month), he told me that even though my contract expires in August (I think), the special rate of R45 expires at the end of June.

This sounds like total BS to me. Can somebody please confirm? I'm pretty sure the contract rate cannot expire before the contract does. I took the R50 for R75 Top Up option with them now but have 10 days to cancel so would like some confirmation before I call them back and give them a piece of my mind.

Dude move to cell c their pricing kicks butt now and their service is great I have 2 contracts no hassles..99c a min on per second billing on contract hehehe

I'm pretty sure I've seen contracts for x per month for x months which go up later... but this would have been mentioned.
You can ask ocleroux here on MyBB to check it out for you (nicely) :)

What he said.

If you took a reduced subs deal x 24 months, then the reduced subs will stay in effect for the full 24 month period. As a example...here is my mum's line and her discount.

Financed Deal End Date: 2013-08-31 Outstanding on Financed Amount: -R980.69
Reduced Subscription -R75.44 14.0 % -R86.00
Contract Term 2013-07-07

If you take out a R75pm contract with a cheapie phone, they will reduve the subscriptions for 24 months.
If you take out a R75pm with an expensive phone, they will add an extra fee for 24 months. Meaning if you take out for example a blackberry 9900 and you pay an extra R50pm (as an example), after the 24 months, you subscription will go back to R75pm.

You are not getting ripped off, you just failed to understand.

Thanks for the info. Well I recall being told it's a 24 month contract and don't recall any mention of price going up before the 24 months. Also, everything was done over the phone and I don't recall receiving any correspondence with the terms and conditions in it.

It's not that I have a problem with paying an extra R5, but if the guy lied to me in order to benefit from a sale then I am going to be pretty p*ssed.

I'm not switching to Cell C because most of that airtime gets used on data, and I have an MTN sim as well with plenty of airtime.

@MR.C: there's no device with the contract at all, and the problem is he is saying the price will go up now (at 22 months) and not at the end of the 24 months.

I didn't quite like the attitude of the guy who called me for the upgrade as well. I think I may just cancel it and make use of the MTN sim for a while.

Doesn't vodocom work where you only start paying the new rate after the 24th month so you should still be paying the lower rate for 2 more months if not ask for a recording of the call as you can cancel as the agent gave you incorrect information

Yeah I'm going to contact them and query it. I honestly don't see how or why they would increase it in the 22nd month.

The 'no device' makes sense about the reduced subs. Billing you more from the 22nd month is not how its supposed to be so you are correct, pardon me for assuming.

Oh, and I understand rude staff, we have to all deal with big ego's from call centre staff.
