Hi folks,

I am now due to for an upgrade on my contract and the iPhone 6s is the phone that I want.

I am currently on a Vodacom Smart M Contract and had over 1 GB of data per month for the last 24 months. Now I see that the Smart M contract costs R599 pm and I only get 300 mb of data now? Granted, they'll give me 1 GB for the first 3 months which is laughable.

Has anybody done anything about this in terms of querying this with Vodacom and I'm not talking about customer service or the upgrades department. One thing that I hate is to interact with people who shield the real decision makers in a business as to being able to talk to the right people instead of script readers.

Have you perhaps found a combination of deals, etc to get around this?

I know times are tough and the Rand is weak, but hell, cellphone networks are still making packets of money and they give their customers such #$#@$ deals and no real value.

Let me know your thoughts?

You had a special deal before that clearly included additional monthly data because the Smart M has always been 300MB only, that's nothing new and it has never been more or less. The Smart M costs R320 a month (it's increased by about R20-30 VS former prices, just like all the Smart contracts) anything more you're paying to accommodate a more expensive phone in the contract. Custom deals are possible but you'll be paying even more to increase your data to the same monthly levels.

Mine was a special deal which I've really enjoyed over the last 2 years, but surely people out there have looked at this, laughted hard and did something about it - and perhaps found ways to get more data for their money. I find that there are always ways and means to some redemption and I'm hoping to find one here. 1 GB is R149 which in itself is a joke which would push my monthly sped to R749 which is hectic!

Hey, you want the latest and greatest from Apple and that's gonna cost ya no matter how you slice it. And of course the ZAR getting raped by 3 finance ministers in a single week helps and is going to make future flagships even more "affordable"...at this rate you'll be paying R1599/month for your next one in 2 years time.

Other networks may knock a few bucks off here or there and give you more of the value you want, if you're willing to deal with whatever flaws they may have VS VC's flaws.

i had the vodacom smart l contract and i have since moved to MTN, they gave me 2 gigs per month and 30gigs for the first month to use, i had so much data on my phone my head was spinning, took the iphone 6s plus 64gig on the mtn 750 which comes to about 900 per month, loads of data and airtime per month, not complaining to much

The iPhone is fairly new, the rand is weak and you are on Vodacom.

Yeah, this irritated me too. Also had a iPhone 5S with additional data (600MB) on Smart S and i've switched to the Smart M.
We did a cell c switch and it was the biggest mistake for 2 years. Dropped calls, no signal, no 3G (never mind 4G)
So, I recently took the plunge and just got the damn thing. The 300MB does suck, but if you bolt on an additional 500MB / 1GB its not too bad. R100 P/M for 500MB. R149 for 1GB
So, yes, it does work out to be a bit more expensive, but at least the network is good.

Sad but true

If ever I had a grudge purchase, it's my Vodacom contract - terrible value for money

Go buy the phone for cash on gumtree look for sealed one where the owner/seller has proof of purchase and you should be good to go.

Then go on Vodacom prepaid and start saving some serious cash every month.

This man is clever, op here is your savings!

Going this way you could probably even afford to update the warranty to 2yrs with applecare

If you want data:

this is reason went to MTN. I need a smart m package to just just make it.

Went with MTN - iPhone 64GB on 200 package and still cheaper than vodacom. My coverage has been to put it lightly, always been **** in my area. I need to go outside my house for someone to hear me. MTN is better thus far.

OP - get a MTN sim and check at places you visit often.

Also in a similar situation...on the Voda Smart S contract (expires end Feb) which came with an extra 1GB for the 24 months.

Been looking at the available contracts to get a sense of whats on offer for the iPhone 6s 64GB. Standard contracts offer low data, with stupid amounts of SMS...if I send 2 SMSes a month its a lot. As mentioned, it does look a bit better if you add on a data bundle. Hopefully there will be a better offer early next year with extra data.

The uChoose contracts (which I take is the same as the old top up contracts) seem to be a better option...anyone know how these work? Voda website doesn't appear to explain this in too much detail.

Called the Voda call centre but the guy didn't seem to clued up. On the uChoose 500 (which is R800 for the 6s 64GB), you get R500 airtime which I assume you can allocate between voice and data...so it seems that I can buy a 2GB data bundle for R250, and use the remaining R250 for voice (and the 1 or 2 SMSes). Is this the way it works?

But then the next questions are what happens when the R500 is used up? does all data and voice stop (as per normal prepaid offering) or does the usage continue on the out of bundle rates?
And how does one top up after the R500? Normal pre-paid vouchers?
And does any unused amount from the R500 roll over to the next month?

If my understanding of the uChoose contract is correct, this would seem to be the best Voda option, which includes a fair amount of data, no uncessary SMSes, with some left over for airtime for voice.

Stops

Yes

And does any unused amount from the R500 roll over to the next month?
Yes. As far as I know it's just 1 month rollover. Also as far as I know your own charge ups don't count towards the rollover and are forfeited.
