I will be travelling to the UK later this year. I have already secured an O2 SIM with some airtime loaded. Will there be any issues with using the foreign SIM in my Vodacom contract iPhone 3G (I seem to remember some activation through iTunes with your phone number)

I'm using one right now.

If you're going payg you'll need a different set of settings for data but that's all.

So I won't have issues with syncing with iTunes while over there?

Also, if you're using one right now, you're in the UK right now, right....How well does the iPhone data package work? How strict are they on tethering. I may need to download some podcasts etc.

Sorry. Didn't use it tethered and since I'm about to get on the virgin flight back to sa its a bit late to try it.

Also didn't sync it as I borrowed the missus' macbook instead of taking my macbook pro. :o

You won't be able to tether at all, o2 dont allow tethering on pay as you go.

You can add the Web Bolt-On to the sim (if it isnt a proper iPhone sim with free web/wifi) at a cost of £10 per month, but only for iPhone browsing.

If you're using an iPhone with a Pay & Go SIM card, you can add the O2 Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On for just £10 a month for unlimited internet and Wi-Fi access*. Then you can surf to your hearts content.

To set up O2 Web & Wi-Fi call 2425 free of charge from your Pay & Go mobile phone. Or, text www to 21300 free of charge.

*Data usage whilst roaming not included. Unlimited Wi-Fi is available at any of the 7,500 Wi-Fi hotspots from our partners The Cloud and BT Openzone. Excessive usage policy and full terms and conditions apply.

Do that - otherwise data is incredibly expensive - I chowed through a tenner just using using google maps for half a day
