So, I noticed today that people were laying fibre optics outside my house ealier today, and removing telkom telephone poles etc, asked them what was happening and they said that vodacom/MTN will be running on fibre optics..

They couldn't say anything more, Does anyone have any more info on this or why it's happening?

The guy also stated that if they offered to install a tower in your garden you should say yes seeing as though they would pay you for the renting on your property, could be a lot of money..

Sounds strange?

If they are contractors for VC/MTN then why are they removing Telkom's poles?

Regarding the tower... I'm not so sure about the "lot of money" as it is normally a once-off payment and it's not much much. I would NOT allow any telco to put a tower on my property.

Unless you own a block of flats or a high rise building...

Is this it?

They didn't really say much, "Upgrading everything" basically..
Just saying what he told me, He said Vodacom etc would offer some money for rental or whatever..

Yes, it is but it is also for them to self-provide backhaul to their own towers and links. A big portion of their cost is renting bakhaul from Telkom so they want to commission their own network. As it is pretty expensive to roll out a fibre network, they have collaborated with MTN and even CellC and Neotel in some cases to jointly own the optic fibre links.

Be very careful about accepting offers for them to install a tower or container on your property. Read that contract VERY carefully, especially about their rights to access your property and any future possible expansion.

Also refer to the Craigavon vs iBurst debate... (search MyBB).

Good for Vodacom. Creating a new monster in the space of Telkom...If you can't fight them, join them. I moved to Vodacom Business and its a blast so far.

What package are you on?

Doesn't vodacom still have to connect via Telkom as the last mile somehow??

Not necessarily, hence the self-provision via optic fibre. VC_B provide fibre to the customer's premises - all on their own network (or network that they co-own with MTN, CellC, Neotel or Dark Fibre).

We are busy connecting our offices with fibre, where do you live ? Currently MTN/Neotel is busy laying our fibre in Roodepoort, Boksburg, Albeton, Craighall and Parrow.
