So, apparently Vodacom is now blocking sites. I realise the site in question is probably not worth blocking, but what about when they start blocking other sites. Maybe the block MyBB because it has comments that reflect badly on them.

This is scary. I feel like I need to cancel my contract with them. Are they in breach? Do I have grounds to cancel before the contract period is up, without incurring major fees?

:erm:

If this is the reason why I couldn't go on /b/ yesterday dan gaan ek iemand moer

...So they're blocking several sites? I need to dig out my contract with them. I really hope I didn't sign something that says they can block whatever the **** they!

I find this interesting. We have a function on the system where we activate Adult Filtering on your kids lines, meaning that Adult content is blocked. I am not sure how this is exactly done and what and what not it filters....but I would say a better option would have been to load this website onto this system and rather let parents activate this funtion on their kids lines. I keep on saying....the responsiblilty lies with you as a parent to keep a eye on your child. You alone. The buck stops with you.

pfff now what else are they going to block - anything they want? So if we complain enough Vodacom will block a site. Whats next. If everyone is RICA'd, why not block access to sites by age, or have some sort of filter?

If this is the reason why I couldn't go on /b/ yesterday dan gaan ek iemand moer

Precisely! And if you can't keep your eye on what your kids are looking at on their phones, then there should be a way to block data connection entirely*. I'd be happy to hand my kid a phone with no data and then keep half an eye on what sites they're on, on the home PC.

* Thi is exactly what Vodacom don't want to allow. Then they have a huge number of potential data consumers disabled by the bill payers.

Actually that would be a VERY useful feature tbh...

As much as I love having data access on my phone, my new Android phone has a tendency to chew mountains of data so I've had to find ways to limit its access to the data connection. I have no issues when I'm in Wifi coverage for it to go mental because its not costing me anywhere nearly the same amount of money.

Agrees with occie.

As parent you have the responsibility, not your ISP. Not the government.

The internet and computers is like any tool you use on a daily basis.

By now you know that your car needs oil, fuel and water to operate - and a regular maintenance schedule to keep it running for a long time.

Same with computers.

This means getting clued up with virus filtering, web filtering and the such.

If you don't want to, then you're welcome to having issues with viruses, cyberbullying and the such.

If my pre-teen son pinches my car to go on a joy-ride, I fully expect the gov't to ban cars!

Also, if I hit my thumb with a hammer, I fully expect the government to ban hammers. And thumbs!
NO-ONE has the right to decide what an adult may or may not see

I've got exactly the same issue, actually. But, my HTC has an option in it somehwere to dissallow cellular data, but it'll connect to wifi. So when I come home I've suddenly got data and the phone goes bezzerk with email notifications. I can push and hold the off button and it gives me a list with things like Airplane Mode (as opposed to Aeroplane Mode!) and Mobile Data, where I can turn cellular data on and off. I dunno if that does anything for you...
