Hello Jannie. Seems there might be a glitch in Vodacom RCS. Some of us are having issues getting it to work. Wont connect. Without reposting everything, please have a look here:

At first I thought it was a google issue, but seems even with Google Messages app, our RCS is running through Vodacom, and not Google's universal profile. Can you perhaps look yourside if there is a issue? It is weird because my work number in the Samsung A51 with Google Messages is working 100%. My personal number just does not want to register.

When I tried to unregister on Google to try and rergister from scratch, it says I must contact Vodacom, so that tells me they are not providing my RCS functionality, but Vodacom is.

Hi Ockie

I know is a Vodacom thread, but I am having the very same issue with an MTN sim. I cannot register RCS messaging with the Google Messages app and when I try to unregister it says I should contact my service provider (i.e. MTN).

Wonder why this is happening and if it is a operator issue or a Google issue. Fact that it says we we need to contact our operators tells me that we are going through Vodacom and MTN's RCS and not Google's own RCS servers.

It's quite strange and like you I wonder why this is happening.

I have also noticed that on my other MTN sim/number I am able to register for RCS without any issues. So one of my MTN numbers cannot register for RCS, while another of my MTN numbers can register.

I agree it seems like we are going through Vodacom's and MTN's RCS servers and not through Google's RCS server using the universal Google profile.

Is anyone using RCS or RCS-e? Not being a cake laaitie, serious question due to it being promised for years but never having lived up to expectation and everyone is now using e.g. Whatsapp?

If memory serves, also called Joyn. The -e bit is enhanced (compared to the original RCS) spec

Oh. That is the Google RCS. Google bought them and that is what Google is using to provide RCS in countries where the mobile operators have not played ball to roll out RCS. We however seem to be using our own networks RCS and not Google's.

OK...so put my sim back into the Huawei P10 Lite. Enabled Call+ and Message +
Sent a text to my Samsung work phone which is connected to Google Chat via Messages app. When I open the message on work phone it says it is a Chat message now. But when I respond, the message goes out and it says sent on the Samsung, but does not get delivered to the Huawei. WTH is going on? I am so baffled. Like I said, I dont use it much .... but DAMN.....these things brings out the OCD in me.!

OK...so checked back and all my test messages were saying "not delivered yet" from the Samsung to the Huawei P10 Lite. I tapped on it and said resend as SMS, and it went through and got delivered, so now my Samsung says my personal number is text and not Chat.

@rpm
@jannievanzyl , this could cause problems for people who have been using it and now not potentially getting messages. Can you perhaps have a look into it?

This would imply your number on your Huawei P10Lite is not registered for and not using RCS, hence the Samsung sent it out to the Huawei P10Lite over sms text and not over RCS

Doesn't RCS run over TCP/IP like whatsapp? What does it have to do with the network operator?

If you are on Google's version of it, then I think it does run like other OTT services, but if it runs on Vodacom's implementation of RCS, then it runs somehow through their network layer or something. And we cant choose which we use.

Understood. Does that only apply if you're using a phone running Vodacom's firmware? For example, if you buy a phone from a third-party vendor like Takealot, will it use Google's version of RCS even if you're using a Vodacom sim card?

I honestly dont know. It would make sense that you would be using Google's version instead of Vodacom when running a network unbranded phone because I imagine the firmware contains some kind of setting which links to Vodacom's RCS server. But I really dont know.

I have sent a email to Vodacom IT and requested that they reprovision RCS on my line and do a network sync. Will see if that helps and will let you guys know.

On my unbranded Huawei phone using a MTN sim I believe it is still not using Googles universal RCS profile, and instead using MTN's implementation. I say this because I have the very same problem when trying to unregister as described in Ockie's original post on this thread.
