Good day

I did a mobile number port from CellC to Vodacom on the 16th of November, but my old sim card is still active. I have been to all three Vodacom stores in Tygervalley weekly or called in, untill I finally found out that the port was done incorrect. The staff are sometimes rude when speaking on the phone.

Yesterday I called in to find out what I have to bring with me to fix this, and while the assistant was checking on the computer he didn't cover the phone completely and I heard him complain about idiot youngsters who don't know how it's done" and something about stupid gay customers. I put down the phone, because I have some issues with this:

1) I don't like being called an idiot, even behind my back
2) I am 26, not a teenager
3) I am not a technician, so I don't know how the process works
4) I don't mind being called out for liking guys, but what does this have to do with anything?

VodacomRep, I would like to cancel my port - it was incomplete in the first place so it shouldn't be that hard. I do not want to be associated with a company that discriminates against my age, race, IQ, gender, sexual preference or anything else they can find.

If it was a homophobic comment, I would take it up with their head of PR, failing that, go to the HRC.
Bloody disgrace

Regarding the comments, I would definately put a complaint in regarding this. I am a bit unlcear though...was this someone at the shop or was it a call centre agent? If it was in the shop then it might be hard to prove.

Regarding the port and your old sim still being active. Sometimes your old provider will assign a ghost number to the sim to keep billing you if you are still in contract. MTN did this to my mom when I ported her. They told her she must give them instruction to cancell her contract.

Something similar might have happened in your case. I suggest you give yoru old provider a call and see what the status is on their side.

Is the new Vodacom sim working that was issued to you?

@Qwikslver
Bad CellC reception in my area was the reason for the port. But I am still stuck on CellC...guess I can live with that.

Qmarine1
I do not have a feminine voice, but I've heard the shop assistants joke around before when I was in the store, so there's a major issue. I do not know if it is the entire Vodacom or just that store that has a homophobic nature, but this shouldn't even be a problem today. Business is business.

Guess I'll have to get that Iphone 5 from MTN or 8ta...

I would just like to add....Vodacom as a company is most certainly not homophobic. I myself know and have known about 5 people that work or have worked @ Vodacom. Also, shop staff is not employed and hired by Vodacom. This is up to the franchisee. Homophobia and racism should not be tolerated from staff.

You should report this to [email protected] and give as much details as you can. Names, dates and times of the call. Customer Care will then take it up with the store.

How did he know that you were gay? And what's a *****?

@abzo, I edited the post to remove the asterisks. What does Hellopeter have against the word idiot? It's good enough for Vodacom stores...

And it wasn't the call centre, but the store itself. I don't remember the name of the person I spoke to....

Maybe he likes guys too and felt you were a threat...
haters gonna hate

Thank you. The comments on MyBB, Facebook and Twitter so far have been very positive. Haven't heard anything from Vodacom yet, but I don't want to have anything to do with them anyway.

Ockie is from Vodacom. He is most helpful and can certainly guide you. (NO PUN INTENDED)

Ockie is not the oficial vodacom MYBB rep but he will always try his best to help -

How come you mom was suporting the competition in the first place?

Because I did not start working in my current job straight out of the womb. :p I was still in school when she got her MTN number

Ockie responded twice, the guy didnt acknowledge it. :/

I tried to reply, but MyBB was down. I didn't know that @Ockie works for them, but from his posts he seems like a cool guy. Next time you're in Cape Town, come over for a beer.

Anyway, update time:

I've already received two official apologies from Vodacom, and my port (still pending) was cancelled. So now I can move on. It is just sad that you are still treated differently because of race, age, gender etc. (The guy didn't even ask if I'm gay... or single...) I've been in situations when older people have been treated like morons, just because of their age. Females are sometimes treated as inferior. Etcetera. In business you should let go of prejudice and focus on what's at hand.

Anyway, I've received a lot of support for standing up to VC, and some people have tried to shoot me down too. But mostly positive. So I guess this was a learning/growing experience...

@Ockie, that beer...
