I upgraded my vodacom software a month ago to 9.1.1.5142

After the shock of how much ram this new version consumes (and how much i had to pay/download to fix problems in VODACOM/VODAPHONE's software), it started crashing about 2 weeks ago. I launch mobile connect, and about 2 mins later the windows close program dialogue box appears.

Tried reinstalling the software, no luck!

If i run the VMC type in my pin then connect after it crashes then i can use the connections created in network connections, but i have no control over 3g/hsdpa/edge etc

OT: the download size for the software is really big, cant you make an APN that just allows software updates and loading of airtime. Procedure currently: Put mtn sim in, goto online banking, transfer airtime, goto vodacom4me load bundle (if it actually allows me, quite often it says your bundle has not expired!)

well firstly i suggest try not using the vmc software unless really necessary. As for the connection in "network connections", i use it and works wonders for me, no waiting for software to load, just double click and bam im connected. Why would you want control over 3g/edge/gprs? If you have 3g reception then use it. If you dont then (as long as vmc profile has been set to pref 3g but use gprs aswell) your card will automatically adjust itself.

There have been a significant number of posts suggesting that VMC9.1 crashes due to one or more SMSes or MMSes received & stored on the SIM card, the workaround is to delete those SMSes|MMSes after putting the SIM card into a normal phone and then back into the modem.

What modem are you using with VMC?

There is a later version of VMC (9.1.2.5766) on the Vodacom site. It has been working well for me on Vista. You can find it here: http://www.vodacom.co.za/services/mobile_data/downloads.jsp

All good and well, but that is another +-75 Megs later. Does @leno really need it?
Which modem and operating system is @leno using?
IMO the HMC software is the better dashboard to use.

Does Vodacom have an issue if the shipped VMC software is replaced with the HMC software. Much more stable. Yes there are a couple of manual things to do but once it is done that is it. This information can all be found on the Forum. Lots of help here.
:)

The first question Vodacom support (or any support person) is going to ask you is if you are on the latest version. Hence the suggestion. And really 76MB is not *that* big. If you don't have bandwidth to spare the Vodacom customer care shops usually have the latest copy on hand (I have had great service from the one in Canal Walk). Also I'm guessing you will pretty much be on your own (except for help from the forum) if you deviate from the VMC. So by all means if you are technical and can help yourself go with the generic MC from your manufacturer, else stick to the supported software.

When i use vmc i get hsdpa, without i only get 3g (i use vmc to position my aerial to find hsdpa in my house - a very fine adjustment is needed but i cannot tell without the statuse

I will try see if they have the latest edition at vodashop, authough i am tempted to use the generic software as VMC chows far too much ram :)

Thought i identified my card right, but when i tried to load a new firmware it said incorrect card. Windows picks it up as a Huawei. Im running xp pro sp 2.

Thx for the info on sms's on the sim card, will try that now when i disconnect

Already asked. Which modem are you using:-
1) PCMCIA/Datacard Modem?
or
2) E220 USB Modem?

It sounds like it could be the Huawei E620 HSDPA PCMCIA data card modem.
