Denying you were at a union meeting... with or without a sicknote - and then trying to cover your tracks by making crap stories is a lie.

Sick note, Tracking has nothing to do with it. If you are confronted by your boss asking you where you were on day "X" - the reply is "I was at home sick" - Then the next question that follows is "But why did these people see you at the union meeting?" - After this question there are 2 avenues that could be taken. Either remorse or retaliation. Remose shows that the employee did know it was wrong and is sorry, but Retaliation shows that the employee has just been busted and cant back up his/her story.

If they were jogging down the road and the Boss asked "Then reply - I was jogging" , not - "I was sick in bed all day, I have a note to proove it"

The legal profession also tends to look at facts, not assumptions.

Have to agree with Telkomhater. The fact is that we just don't know enough on her case particulars (unless we work for you-know-who , in which case we could be very helpful to this discussion if we chose to...) to really be able to have a substantive discussion.

@Telkomhater - I don't recall seeing a privacy policy from Vodacom about how it uses the information collected about users - including employees.

They have not shown to be the most principled company on the face of the earth, so if there is nothing to stop them from doing something, I would not assume they don't on principle.

Another place where regulation seems to lag behind technology, if you ask me, though the framework exists.

About work related stress, yes that sounds more likely - ask Skeptik - he once stated that it was his personal mission to make the life of Vodacom call centre agents a living hell by being as rude to them as possible, so imagine what one single call from Skeptik can do to a Vodacom employee's mental health.

The real issue that this thread should be discussing is that Vodacom used their own tracking / tracing technology to their benefit.

How does that make you feel? Knowing that they are capable of it and THAT THEY DID IT, do you feel 'vulnerable'? or do you trust that wont use that capability against you!

Just for in case someone haven't mentioned it yet. I hope everyone is aware of the rather sophisticated tracking devices companies place on their own vehicles , ESPECIALLY in the delivery/trucking/transport industries?

Heck i've read of devices that can alert HQ that the driver has deviated from his route or stopped too long.....

Is that spying or proper management ? If a trucking company can monitor an employee 24-7 via a -company- truck, i don't see why a cellphone company can't monitor their employees via a -company- cellphone.

Don't want to be monitored?

1. Don't use the company car for your weekend holiday trips
2. Don't use the company laptop to view porn
3. Dont use the company phone for things you don't want your company to know about
4. Don't use the company email to send out racist jokes

...and it goes on...i thought it was common knowledge?

Heck i've read of devices that can alert HQ that the driver has deviated from his route or stopped too long.....Tracking is a lot of marketing hype it is possible to find some of the devices and disconnect them in a very short time. I won't mention names of companies, they have mouths to feed, but I assure you I have done it myself

1. Don't use the company car for your weekend holiday trips Disable or disconnect tracker if you know what you are doing and can BS what the problem is you can get away with it, the tracking company will call a few times and then they will get fed up and leave it like ADT does after many false alarms
2. Don't use the company laptop to view porn Delete you history etc install a proxy on the bosses machine
3. Dont use the company phone for things you don't want your company to know about This is true because your boss wille see phone numbers, use Skype instead, or try and see if you can get PABX guy to set PABX to private numbers if your concern is that the other party will know where you are calling from
4. Don't use the company email to send out racist jokes Install a keystroke logger that is hidden and use the idiot you don't likes account for this

It is common knowlegde but there are always workarounds lol
