so i finally took out a contract with vodacom for the galaxy tab 10.1 at R329 per month! with the tab i get 500mb a month. Now i know that 500mb in this day is not much so i restricted by browsing to about 30mb per day. So on the 10th (Monday) my last balance was around 285mb, and at midnight of the 10th i see my data usage (guy at vodacom sent me a spreasheet of my usage) and it shows that starting from 00.00 and for every 3-4 seconds intervals that i used exactly 2 mb. this went rigt on untill 06.12 at which the usage stop(probably because my battery died) . Now is this not suspicious that will i was sleeping that every 3-4 seconds this usage occured??

so i decided to phone vodacom and with running around to about 3 consultants the last one says she is going to put me back to the department which i initially called who put me through this department. i have currently been waiting on the line listening to the most irritating music for the last 38.14 minutes!!!!

how do i resolve this problem? is this grounds to cancel my contract?(not that i want to but what if this happens again?)

I don't think irritating music is grounds for cancelling a contract. You can always ask them to change the music - but I don't think they will though!

Might be some naughty application running in the background on the tab?

If it was that, then there's nothing you can do about it, except be more careful in future.

It can be nothing other than an app being naughty, best option is to root it and install droid wall, that way u can control what apps get to use the 3G as I assume you would not be bothered by it using the wifi.

You can also get my data monitor, https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mobidia.android.mdm and it will tell you exactly what app is using what data, its good for monitoring but you will still need to root if u hope to block the app, especially if its one you need.

Question : What would the connection speed be for one to download 2mb of data every 4 seconds ?

Thanks CBlaze, but doesn't rooting void my warranty? Only other solution if it is an app is to go into flight mode when I'm not using the tab, that will suck.

4mb, standard 3G. Well that's a little slow with 3G these days being 7. 2 generally. Don't know the specs of that tab but it should be capable of more.

Only if your stupid enough to tell them. Sent my rooted phone in after I bricked it by installing a custom rom, they fixed it for free, I just played dumb and said I had no idea what happened.

Also airoplane mode may not help if it starts doing it during the day.

Hhmmm had a look at it again, its in minutes not seconds. Just the weird part is that its like a pattern, how do u upload a file? Ill upload the spreadsheet showing the usage

the way that I understand it...for billing purposes, you are billed in increments...so they take the usage and bundle it is little packets. It wont be one looooonggggg transaction on your itemized bill.

fair enough, but then when i look at previous usage there was no such pattern it was mostly random figures and times...

Ok, that makes more sense.

Possibly something on your phone is checking for updates ?

Well, if it was a app like the others have mentioned and it was updating itself or using a continuous conection to do what ever it was doing...then that is what your billing would look like. Before this app started to misbehave, and you only connected now and then then your billing would look more scattered.

so i guess the question is now is will vodacom be able to go more in depth to see what was using the data? would that even be possible?

Nope, the way data is counted and as its an android its likely 1 app is responsible for the higher usage but you will have more than 1 app connecting at the same time, would simply be too much to sort through and filter down exactly which destination ip is using the most data and then track down what app it is. They will probably give you the same advice I did, minus the rooting part.

Its your phone, your contract, your data and you downloaded the app, its 100% your responsibility and its unlikely they will do much more than what they already have. They cannot be held liable nor will they accept any liability for data being used by your device, weather or not your asleep
