Vodacom upgrade - please help!!!

I would really appreciate some upgrade advice. I've had the Nokia 6680 for a while now - great phone, with no problems, other than the frustratingly slow Symbian software (and maybe the size). I'm gadget crazy and always wanted the phone with the most functions (I was one of the idiots standing in a queue for a 7110 to get WAP ...).

Anycase, I've realised that I actually want a small, light, fast phone with just the functions that I actually use. Needed: alarm, calender and synch, e-mail, internet surfing (preferrably 3G, but not crucial, since I don't get 3G signal at my house). I prefer Nokia as I have a number of chargers and USB cables that I can use at home and office. I've done a lot of searching on the net and it seems that the N series is taking flack for reliability - and in case mostly to large for my taste.

At long last I think I have found the phone that suits the bill - the Nokia 6233. Quick interface, business orientated, good reviews. Surprise, surprise! Vodacom only sells the Vodafone branded, functions limited 6234 - which I won't take under any circumstances. Both Cell C and MTN has the 6233. I considered porting, but according to two shops I spoke to I will inevitably not be able to receive calls for a number of days - which is not acceptable.

Sorry for the long post - my question is basically what phone you would recommend?

Why not try a K800? Its worth it, I promise you;) Very close to symbian but not, can minimise everything, Java apps, music player etc... Fastest handset web browsing IMO, Very very fast user interface!
 
Thanks for the quick reply! Forgot to mention bluetooth and ability to open .pdf/office files.

JK8 - I don't know why, but I've never been a SE fan. Will take a look at it though, don't know much about them.

LUKE777 - there is so many bad reviews on this forum of all the Vodafone branded stuff, including inability to upgrade firmware etc. etc. I really don't understand why it is necessary to change the original phone in the first place??? I understand you cannot force 3G on the 6234, which might be handy.
 
I'm still baffled as to why people ask for advice on here when "upgrading". Get off your lazy arse, go onto each manufacturer website and browse for what you want.
Obviously everybody on here will tell you to get this phone and that gadget and soon your thread spirals into a fight between which phone is better/k@kker than the other.

My advice - ask Vodacom for a new Porsche 911. It comes with a handy slot where you can pop your SIM into. Then you have a nice R600k car-phone and everybody will be envious. Sorry about the lack of PDF-reader functionality; I'm sure you will cope.

Now, lets wait for someone to tell me Porsche is a k@k car and a Tata is better etc etc.
 
Dear ICBXX - you are a complete @sshole.

I have lifted my lazy arse (as you so eloquently stated) and did a lot of research, went to a couple of cell phone shops etc. Point is, couldn't find anything I like. Now found the phone I like, and given the specs I need, wanted some feedback on possible phones that compare with it. If you read carefully (or just read) you will notice the question is not the usual general "which phone is best" unanswerable question.

Sorry it didn't fit your description of allowable subjects. If you could post a list of subjects that are OK I will gladly oblige.

If you going the 6234/6233 way I would suggest you go the SE way, they both have the same menus if you going with Vlive branding.
Its far better than those 2.

You never been a SE fan is always funny, they only 5 years old!;)

The manufacturers websites don't give you the whole picture though, its interesting to hear about people's personal experiences too.

dude, come on! That is the beauty of these forums! Here you will get real answers and opinions about products that actual people have used and can comment on.

You will never find that on the official sites.

the number of times this forum has helped me make an informed decision whether it be cellphones, laptops, pcs, cars, the list goes on!

The problem is that the differences between a Vodafone and an original is, as far as I know, nowhere documented in public.

Comments about the Vodafone branded phones vary from it is difficult to follow the manual due to the Vodafone Icons not being the same as the originals in the manual up to that the Vodafone software crashes the phone.

In between there were remarks of the Vodafone versions having reduced functionality of the originals. I can vouch for this on the E220 3G USB modem.

I wish Vodacom would stick at what they are really good at: Selling cellular phones and providing a cellular network. And I wish they would drop this add-on service of trying to be better cellphone software developers than the manufaturers themselves.

You mean this ?:
The UMTS-only option has been removed from the 6234 by Vodafone. I suspect it is to ensure you'll always use 3g, if available, but will always have a fall-back to GSM.

Anyway, choice is yours..I'm quite happy with mine and will most probably upgrade the wife's phone to same as well

Why does everyone on these forums want to force 3G?
I think its the stupidest thing ever and even worst if you basing you upgrade choice on it!:rolleyes:

Yes, that is what I meant. I said I don't have 3G at my house - what actually happens is that i pick up 3G, but as soon as I use the phone to access the internet on my PC it reverts back to GPRS. If the phone does have 3G it would be handy to force it and see if I can obtain better speeds (the GPRS is really slow).

It is good to hear that you are happy with it though, I'm definitely going to consider it. The fast UI is a huge plus for me.

I've told a number of people complaining about bad reception for voice since they got their 3G phones to force to 2G and it was the end of the voice problems for them.

Unfortunately it is not a nice solution if one requires 3G data speeds.:mad:
