Hi,

Before I receive flames, I APOLOGISE FOR HERE *duck*

However, I want to find out whether Vodacom can block a certain number to my phone?

The problem is I've been receiving calls from a prepaid number for over a week - at all times of the day - from people that speak Zulu or Xosa or something. They cannot, or will not, speak english - and just carry on in their own language. It's not a firnd playing a prank - nor is people that dial an incorrect number by mistake. This happens roughly 3 times a day - sometimes starting at 5:40am and the last call at 11:30pm.

I've phoned the call centre twice - and they say either

a) open a case at the police station
b) change my number
c) get someone to explain the error in their language.

Is it physically possible to BLOCK that number from reaching my phone?

if your phone has caller groups, stick that number in a group of its own and set the ringtone to a special one, one that you know you can just ignore. Not a root-cause fix, but a fix non-the-less.

I had a similar situation over Christmas, so I can offer some advice.

1. Do not bother with the police. They will not open a case for this, if you are lucky they will consent to take a sworn statement from you.

2. If you change your number, your service provider will charge (in my case R250). Unless you can show a police case number, for which see 1 above.

3. Try setting a 'special' ring tone of 'none' for the number concerned. Then they can chat to your voicemail to their heart's content.

I had to change my numner because myine were prank calls and the number was withheld

Best thing you could do is answer the call, and let the phone lay on the table while you go and make sum tea.. return with a few rusks.. browse through myadsl's New Posts page.. have a rusk.. comment on something on myadsl.. have another rusk.. go to slashdot to check up on tech news.. have a rusk.. finally, after 15 minutes, see if your call is still active.. if not - GREAT, they've just wasted a fortune cos the morons are on Prepaid!

I can't believe this, really!

I've been a Vodacom contract holder for 10 years - and because of this small irritation, they may lose a client when it comes to renewal?

I don't have groups on my phone - Samsung D500 ;)

Gonna need another box of rusks...

BTW I had the same crossed-line type calls when I had a CellC pre-paid sim card - I got calls from the same 072# at all times of the day & night & I did add the 072# to a silent 'ignore' call group on my cellery phone, I also used to answer the call & never hangup...eventually their credit must've run dry...oh and I switched to a contract with CellC & different# - hasn't recurred since...

Sounds like a legit question, so no flames.

I don't believe this is possible from a network perspective but will check in any case.

Some handsets provide call and SMS 'management' functions where you can set up call black lists, etc.

footnote: I forgot to 'submit' this reply so it's a few posts to old....

Did check, not possible on the network. Best to do it on the handset, if possible.

Hi Dolby,

I'm also using the D500, and if memory serves, I remember seeing an option somewhere to block a number on the phone.
I have though just browsed through my phones settings, but could only find the option to block a number from sending you SMSs. Maybe if you check the phone's manual, you might find a way.

Regards

Inertia :)

Not possible as in Vodacom has not bought the feature or not possible as it is not possible for a mobile number? The feature is definitely available on the Siemens switch for fixed line subscribers.
