Vodacom's alternative to weak usb modems?

I have a Vodacom USB modem, 3G capable, which I dont use because it constantly drops out from 3G connections. There is 3G coverage in my area as I mostly use it on my android(same place,same spot. I ended up resorting to using my android as a wifi hotspot. I dont want to use it though. Is there any alternative to this? something more reliable. Something that wont drop out constantly, something that will givd me great 3G speeds.
 
It wont work when I set to 3G only. Will a router solve my problems?(I dont have a landline connection)
 
I usually get 1Mbps, so my 3G isnt "crap". With my phone, I get HSDPA(3G) with no drop outs. The only problem is the modem. Yes, I agree, the title is misleading.

If you have good 3G signal on your phone but 3G on your modem does not work then there is something going on with that modem. How old is this modem? Perhaps it is time for a replacement. Instead of getting the usb stick ... rather get a mifi router.
 
How old is that modem? Maybe look up firmware updates on the manufacturer's site. Also try the latest VMB software, if you using a huawei E220 then forget it lol

The problems have been there since day 1. I was thinking of a MI-FI but I was concerned about reliability and connection drop outs. Is it reliable?
 
I now only use a mifi portable router (the Huawei E5331 which is the generic version of Vodacom's 205 I think) and it's been a great little investment. Reliable, good range (especially if you run it off the supplied power adapter, which then takes the range from 10-20 m on the internal battery, up to 100 metres). The only irritation is not being able to disable the timeout so that if it is not used for some time it goes into standby to save power, and has to be woken up by a quick button press. But that's a very small niggle. It's also able to pull in a good and consistent 8ta signal even though I live in a marginal area where signal strength is shown as no bars at all.

And to answer an earlier question in this thread, Huawei does indeed have its own generic dashboard embedded in the device -- but if I'm not mistaken Vodafone overwrites this with its own in their branded versions. On the plus side for the Vodafone version however, is that you can get a nifty little Android app for the Vodafone device, which is not available for the generic model.
 
If you're sure it's a modem and not the availability of VodaCom's 3G network in your area, then I'd suggest buying any other modem from 8ta, MTN etc. They will work with your Vodacom modem.
 
I also had the dongle modem problem with Vodacom. Used it in the android and worked like a dream.
