Could not help but smile when I read the conditions on the Vodacom website:

"Fair Use Policy: Three hours (180 minutes) of mobile television content per subscriber per month is deemed fair usage. Vodacom reserves the right to limit a customer's usage of the mobile TV service should they view mobile TV beyond the fair usage limit."

Seems they took a leaf out of Telkom's book....

At R4 per minute for the pay per view channels, I somehow do not see anyone "unfairly" using the service anytime soon. :p

Actually, that is R60 per month. And you can use 180 Minutes.

That works out to 33c per minute, dude.

The R59 per month is for the standard channels - the "pay per view" is R4 per minute...dude...

Saw their ad on TV last night - they were talking about "Free mobile TV"
More false advertising for the ASA? Comments please...

Thing is, watching TV on my cellphone is not exactly something I plan to do anytime soon. In my opinion this 3G feature is marketed at teenagers with too much pocket money. Something cool to show your friends at school with 'stone-aged' non-3G cellphones.

I was wondering more about the article a few weeks ago about Vodacom entering the pay-TV market, using the cellphone as as a 'decoder' for your normal TV set. I asume the current offering is geared more towards testing the market and sorting out technical kinks.

I remember using GPRS via my cellphone 2 years ago - we payed R45/MB out of bundle. I also remember my first account - ouch!

Comparing this to the latest data offerings - I can only assume the TV via mobile broadband will (have to) become a lot cheaper over the next few years.

Do we have to unsubscribe at the end of the month to not get charged R59?
I subsribed for free at the beggining of the month, am worried now that they might charge me for not deregistering ro something...

anyone know?

yeah i saw on tv it was free, so i went on Vlive... and then i saw "free now but..." and i said AYKONA and just left. they are not trapping me into R59 a month thanks. personally i think unless Vodacom offers mobile TV for free they are not gonna get anywhere.

Is it just me or is that a complete total ripoff?

Mobile TV in SA should have a flat rate for unlimited viewing if they want users to subscribe & the service to grow :)

My suspicions is that you have to bind yourself in to a 24month Contract to get 1 month free.... there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Unfortunately Video over IP is not conducive to this. As your viewrship grows so does your infrastructure costs. Anyone serious about TV to the handset is focusing on DVB-H. Its closer to normal broadcasting so whether 1 or 10000 people (in an area) are watching, your infrastructure overhead is the same.

When I saw it I thought it was unlimited.

I guess I'm just used to the cheap offerings here in Australia. R60 for 3 hours is ridicilous.

Yea, that is R60 for 180 min for fashion TV and the stuff you already get with DSTV. The real good stuff (like HBO) is still gonna cost you R4/min. Ouch. That calculates to about R240 per episode for a worthwile series. I'd rather download it via the internet and watch it on my slightly bigger PC screen.

I am not knocking the concept, but I think we all know that this is only a test for much bigger things (not only screen size) to come. I agree with riaan - like GPRS @ R45/Mb, early adopters are used to test (and fund?) bigger and cheaper things to come...:)

Sheesh, talk about GRPS, you guys in SA get it for R2 a MB prepaid, we pay $20 a MB (R100)...

Offtopic question.. how much is DSTV a month anyway? I can't seem to find a straight up price on their site?

Surely it's not even R240, and that's just for episode, ****.

waste of money i could use for an extra account on the internet to download what i want to watch. BLEH : )
