Voice being blocked?

Does anyone know if voice via MS IM and Yahoo IM via DSL is being blocked?

No voice calls go through to the US using these instant message services, but call using the exact same settings via ISDN and they work!

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Telkom calls it "shaping traffic" to prevent abuse by "power users". I can confirm that MSN VoIP doesn't work either.

MSn Doesnt work as it used a host of ports for its connections, but I managed to get Yahoo voice and Video to work. Voice should work stright off, to get webcam to work u need to configure TCP port 5100 through your PAT settings.

Haven't tried it for a while now, but I do recall that MSN voice do not want to work if you have a firewall installed.

VoIP is illegal in SA anyway afaik because it bypassses Telkom. Honestly do you think they will let you talk to someone for free or make you pay lots of money?

Karnaugh? It bypasses Telkom? So who supplies the ADSL connection on which this VoIP is supposed to take place?

I would not phone my friends in the US, but because of MSN messenger I will actually attempt VoIP or low quality webcam videoconferencing to add a bit of a personal touch.

Agreed Karnaugh, it is illegal, but you still HAVE to use Telkom infrastructure to do it in most cases.

gogolad - the traffic is not neccesarily blocked, just such low priority that your PC thinks there is no connection

Elf - no special config either side, but I sit online some days, my sister in Cape Town asks how is the weather here in JHB using MSN messenger and I point my webcam at the window and send her the view
