Hi there
Just a simple question. I have wifi in my house, and if I switch to wifi on my cellphone, and make a voice call, do I use my wifi data (adsl), or my call data (mins)?
Chris
To answer the unasked question first: For any voice call to a landline or mobile, you need to pay someone for the minutes. There's no such thing as a free call to those destinations.
If you just call as normal on your phone, you will be using your mobile call airtime, and it won't touch your WiFi.
There is a way to make use of your WiFi, but the call itself will still cost something. If you use a commercial VoIP app (like Skype, but there will be others in South Africa soon), it will use your WiFi, but you will need to pay them for the actual call to landline or mobile. The amount of WiFi data you use will be very small, so there will be a negligible cost for that part.
If you and the person you are calling are using the same app, VoIP calls over WiFi can be free e.g. Skype to Skype, and the only cost will be the small amount of WiFi you use.
One final point: Very recently, some mobile operators (though not the SA ones quite yet) started "offloading" calls from their own networks to someone else's WiFi (like yours), using similar VoIP technology to Skype etc, but they will still charge you the full price of the call even if they use your network, so it's more to save them money than you.
