I have recently changed networks from Vodacom SA to MTN SA but ever since I've inserted the new sim into my iPhone 3G 8GB I cannot dial Voicemail using the dedicated Voicemail button under the "Phone" menu. I get the screen below:

I have been doing some googling and there is a method of dialing *5005*86*[insert carriers voicemail number]#. However, does not work for me.

Another way I've found is SSH'ing into the phone and editing the /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/[Your Carrier Bundle folder]/carrier.plist file. But I don't seem to have the specific Carrier Bundle folder for my network. And I'm having trouble SSH'ing into my phone from my home PC now due to doing a System Restore (suggested by others who had the same issue).

I am really at a loss here and it would be great if someone could help me out with this one. Thanks.

My phone: iPhone 3G 8GB (Jailbroken w/ Redsn0w)
iOS 3.1.3 (Baseband 05.12.01)

P.S. My last resort would be to flash iOS 4 >.

Dude...I don't have a week to waste on the phone with MTN while they bounce me around from one "technician" to another only to tell me that they don't know how.

If you can't help, then please don't post. Looking for constructive solutions. Thanks.

I think I found it!!!

Code:
http://www.volkspost.info/ipcc_fw3/

This site seems to be the key to doing the carrier bundle setup. It seems these carrier bundles come preinstalled with the firmware and only those who are official iPhone vendors/networks' settings (carrier bundles) are included in the firmware. MTN did not "adopt" the iPhone on it's network up until recently. Hence, the lack of settings for the MTN network.

Will test and reply later with results.

UPDATE: Works like a charm...However, don't forget this step:

Preparations
Installing the custom bundle is easy via iTunes. Cause Apple broke the "injection" in iTunes you have to re-enable it first. Make sure to have iTunes latest version installed, quit the program if running.
On a Mac open the application Terminal (in Applications/Utilities) and type:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE
on Windows open command prompt and type:
"%ProgramFiles%\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1
Injecting the IPCC-Files is enabled again.

Just stuck my MTN sim in my iPhone4 v4.2.1
Dialed *5005*86*100# then pressed CALL
The screen flashed briefly, the numbers stayed on-screen
Pressing the voicemail button now dials my voicemail.

Pitty MTN dont support VVM.

For me thats a big advantage for iPhone users on Voda, going back to IVR voicemail would be painful with the amount I get.

Thanks - that worked perfectly on my 3G. :)

Bwana, what F/W do you have?

BTW, creating a carrier bundle not only fixes the Voicemail button it also:
- Disables the call forwarding notification when making or receiving calls (I had this also and it was QUITE annoying)
- Allows you to set custom carrier name and logo
- Allows you to create a carrier service menu under "Settings" > "Phone" to do things like check airtime balances or activate services (eg. dial *141*1*1# to check airtime)
- Creates a Bundle folder with all your MMS and Internet settings so if you reflash or wipe your phone, those settings can be loaded with a simple iTunes sync.

4.2.1 - Jailbroken.

Those carrier bundle features look nice but I don't really use the phone often to make calls - mostly skype and tomtom truth be told.

Aaah! 4.2.1...That makes sense. I'm on an older f/w. 3.1.3 to be exact. So that could be it.

Want to update to 4.2.1. soon. But don't wanna lose all my Cydia apps :( And there's no way of backing them up. I used to use RockMyPhone and they had a "backup" service. But since Cydia took them over they've some how neglected to include that functionality. Apparently, they are currently working on it. But I don't know how long I'll have to wait.

I have a gooood couple of apps that I've downloaded from Cydia. Maybe I just need to sit down with a pen and paper and jot down what's installed and take the plunge. :erm:

@Silvatyrant: That's easy to fix. From Cydia, purchase Pkgbackup - it will backup all your Cydia apps, and more. It will even upload it to dropbox. Then use Greenpois0n (if you don't need an unlock) to jailbreak. After the iTunes restore, you only need to download Pkgbackup from Cydia, and use it to restore all the Cydia apps & prefs.

Thanks, Jerry! Wish I had known about that app a bit sooner :( Took screendumps of all my installed apps and sources in Cydia and once it was jailbroken, installed all the sh*t manually.

Upgraded to 4.2.1 yesterday and jailbroke with Redsn0w. Was using an older version of iTunes so it didn't want to restore to stock 4.2.1, kept getting error 13.

Had to upgrade iTunes first, then restore to stock 4.2.1 and then JB using Redsn0w.

BTW, I find 4.2.1 very sluggish on the 3G. Thinking of going back to 3.1.3.
