Hi All,

I'm sitting with a conundrum....
We are switching from a Telkom IPECS system running on a 2Mb ISDN PRI line, to VOIP. I have 3 companies in the mix trying to get the business, but all 3 give different advice on VOIP requirements. TBH, I don't have that much experience with VOIP so any advice from you guys would be greatly appreciated!

We have +/- 35 staff, but only have a requirement for 10 calls in or out at a time.
We can only get a 10Mb ADSL line in our area, so 10 down and 1 up.

Telkom say - It will never work, don't even try
Canon say - Only change the outgoing calls to VOIP, leave exciting PRI line for incoming
ITEC say - 10Mb would work 100% for incoming and outgoing.

Your thoughts on the 10Mb line for VOIP?

For 10 simultaneous calls plus 25 other people browsing Facebook and sending cat GIFs using the same ADSL line? Forget it

Depends on the codec used... G729, G711, G722, etc.

Wouldn't try 10 concurrent calls on a dedicated ADSL line, let alone a shared one.

Hi.
Theoretically you use about 40kbps on G729 codec, so you should manage 10 calls on 1 meg connection. You need to look at your uplink speed only, as that is the limiting factor.

Bear in mind that you don't often get the maximum line speed on an adsl line.

There are some tricks one can use to squeeze in more calls, but it all comes at a cost.

good luck !

the data rate depends on the packet time, the lower the ptime the higher the data rate so G729:20 would use 40kbps where G729:60 would only use around 15kbps

I can't add much to this thread, other than recommend a separate DSL on a Vibe router and making use of a G729:60 codec. In your use case I also suggest a local Asterisk server but a cloud hosted option will be better if you want to be as hands off as possible.

What not get LTE for the voip calls. That's what we have been using for months... Works perfectly

It does not matter whether you use a dedicated LTE router or a dedicated ADSL line. Both are shared resources, where your quality also depends on many other factors.

ADSL line quality also depends on the ISP.
LTE quality also varies between the different mobile operators. Take a look at the latest MyBB tests in different areas. Operator1 might be great is one area but the worst in another.

I would suggest that you test before you commit to a 24 month contract. Keep your Telkom lines, and ask the VoIP providers to provide a no-obligation trial for 1 to 3 months. (BTW, note the ADSL quality and LTE quality can also change after you commit to a contract, so it would be good if the VoIP provider can suggest more than one backhaul alternative.)

True, but the advantages of LTE in a good LTE coverage area:
1) speed is usually faster than ADSL, so even during congestion, there is a lot more headroom
2) LTE dedicated to VOIP will only be a couple of gigs at most per month and will usually work out cheaper than adsl+Telkom line rental

Thanks for all the input guys. We've decided to go ahead, 10mb ADSL line with a LTE fall over. Also decided to keep my existing ISDN Pri line active for the first month.
Will post feedback once all is in and tested
