It is quite disappointing that while the SGS is a great "fun" device it generally fails at the simple task of making cheap voip calls to normal phones. My 4 year old Nokia took five minutes to set up with Skype and Voipcheap and it actually worked. I just spent 4 hours trying to get Voipcheap to work through Sipdroid and Pbxes and generally failed. While incoming calls seem to work, outgoing fail. Extensive googling revealed the problem to be with Voipcheap and possibly the particular server in use at Pbxes. Little wonder, considering Voipcheap are busy coming up with their own mobile solution.

So, is there anything else that works?

I don't see why you blame the phone for Voipcheap's failure?

Maybe try Nimbuzz or Fring? They are the most poplar VOIP apps on Android as far as I know. Fring no longer supports Skype because Skype blocked them for some BS reason, but they have their own VOIP solution.
The official Android Skype app is only available to specific US networks because Skype are greedy sellouts. Maybe some day they will release it for the rest of us.

Actually i don't blame the phone. As far as hardware goes, it is indeed excellent. I am just disappointed and mystified that despite the perceived advantages of an "open" OS there seem to be no interested developers for a usable voip service. Yet, there is a lot of choice on proprietary platforms such as Blackberry or Symbian. Skype and Betamax seem ok with other phones but not with Android. Gizmo5 is currently not accepting new registrations... Is this not an obvious marketing opportunity for a new market player? Or are most Android users perceived as computer geeks, rather than potential business users?

I know Nimbuzz had some major bugs with the SGS, not sure if they're fixed.
I don't use VOIP myself, at least not on my phone, so I can't comment from experience.

There's also Sipdroid: http://www.appbrain.com/app/org.sipdroid.sipua
I see one of the reviews there says "Works great on galaxy s with Froyo."

Madmatt, thanks for the Nimbuzz suggestion. Seems to work well with Skype - just what i needed.

I have been able to set up my SIP providers (MWeb, FNB Connect, Pennytel and MyNetFone) with PBXes and Sipdroid, but with each the party I call hears bad echoes. This is a known bug with Galaxy S, but there is no solution yet. I have also tried using 3CX but it has quite a big delay (between pressing digits and hearing DTMF tones, and also between talking and getting caller's response. I think it is crazy that there is not a proper SIP application. I have heard talk of a commercial app called Vippie, but there is no option to try before you buy so I'm not sure how well it would work.

Apparently the Android Skype app is not Skype as we know it, but works with a dial-back system linked to specific US carriers. It will not help you. I have tried Nimbuzz to Skype, but callers reported poor call quality over wi-fi links. I need to keep two SIM cards active, and I have the second one in a Nokia E63, which does a great job of both Skype and SIP.

Given the rising popularity of Android, it must be simply a matter of time till both these functions are available.

Skype on Nimbuzz seems just fine on wifi, still haven't had a chance to try it on 3g. Maybe a bit laggy but very clear. It will have to do until something better comes up.
