VOIP at home - some advice please?

Hi,

I am sure that this question has been addressed at some stage, but please can someone assist with some advice on the below - we are in JHB:

1. We are currently using a Telkom landline with a number that is over 20 years old, so factor 1 is that we would like to port this number. I assume this is possible with most VOIP service providers?
2. Fibre is almost installed in our area (Vumatel) and we are intending on switching from ADSL to fibre as soon as it is available. We are looking at 20/20mb, with simple internet surfing and the VOIP telephone. I really think that bw won't be an issue here?
3. We would like to switch from standard line-based phones to VOIP, thus eliminating Telkom completely. Are there service providers that you guys are aware of that package data and VOIP deals into one? If not - who would the best service providers (based on support and pricing) be for VOIP at home on a fibre line? I have tried to search for Voice providers on the Vumatel web site, but they only seem to offer Data packages from different ISP's on their web page.
4. What costs should I be looking at (more or less) for the VOIP phone and a monthly service fee etc?

I ask all these questions, because I do not want to take the "VOIP plunge" if it is not going to be worth my while cost-wise. I would then just cancel the ADSL line and stick to the old analogue phone line through Telkom.

Check out Cool Ideas. They do ISP + VOIP, including porting your telkom number. They'll sell you preconfigured phones as well
 
Switchtel.co.za are Great! Been using them for about a year.
 
Hey guys, so noob here when it comes to VOIP - we have a guard entry system at our complex with a Telkom line - it's costing us close to R1k a month for all the phone calls to residents to ask if he can let people in.

Looking at this VOIP option - I see companies like VOX offer an unlimited option.

Is this a worthwhile thing to look at (concept wise) - does it work as well (and as simply) as a telkom line works?

Absolutely! Just as simple as a Telkom line. I’d contact Switchtel and discuss your requirements specifically. They might be able to work out a custom solution.

I’ve cut my business telephone account down buy around R2000 a month switching to VOIP.

The biggest unnecessary overhead with Telkom is the line rental cost. You should also consider a cellular deskphone with a SIM card.

With VoIP, you also have to budget for the Internet bandwidth costs.
 
Presuming these calls are to landlines:

Telkom offer unlimited calling for R599
Or you could go telkom mobile on a cheap freeme plan that has free landline calls?
