What is a VoIP Gateway

Hi

A VoIP Gateway allows you to place off network calls, in other words calls can now be routed from your LAN into a PABX or POTS network. The device has a number of ports, most notably LAN port/s and FXO and FXS ports to connect to telephone instruments or PABX/POTS line/s.

Next you need to setup a dial plan on your VoIP server that will route calls off the LAN under certain conditions, such as if a user precedes a number to be dailed with a 0 then that call gets routed off network - (as an example). As far as cost goes, depends on the ammount of ports you require

Hopes this helps

Again guys ... it's worth to look at TelFree ( http://www.telfree.co.za/ )

Edited:

So you can set up a SIP trunk from Asterisk ... so you don't need any FXO cards/gateways .. just IP connectivity

Have you done this successfully? I am having trouble with getting my Asterisk box to register with TelFree. I'm also having codec troubles.

yeah mine is running 100% .... here is my config from /etc/asterisk/users.conf (Asterisk 1.4):

[trunk_1]
disallow = all
allow=g729
context = DID_trunk_1
dialformat = ${EXTEN:1}
hasexten = no
hasiax = no
hassip = yes
host = sip99.telfreesa.com
port = 5060
registeriax = no
registersip = yes
secret = xxxxxx
trunkname = Custom - TelFree
trunkstyle = customvoip
username = 87750xxxx
callerid = 87750xxxx
fromuser = 87750xxxx
fromdomain = sip99.telfreesa.com
permit = 196.46.138.29/29
insecure = very
qualify = no
canreinvite = no

I have done most of this using the GUI (http://www.asteriskguru.com/tutorials/asterisk_gui.html) and then added a few things later on.

I had to purchase a G.729 license ($10) .. not that bad (http://www.digium.com/en/products/voice/g729codec.php)

Obviously, you have to replace the "xxxx" above with your details.

This works very well for me ... as my family can now dial a local 087 number (R0.59c / min from Telkom line) and it rings directly on my SIP phone (on the living room floor at the moment ;). Normal Telkom rates to the UK is about R9.00 / min, so works very well for me !

Good Luck.
