There are new laws being tabled for Voip providers in SA to make it mandatory that they provide access to emergency services and the ability to intercept calls.
The problem I see with this is it is almost imposible to guarantee 100% access to these services if the data is traveling over the internet, as the Voip provider does not have any control over the Net!
In the USA the 911 operators have the ability to track the location of the caller on any call even though the caller may not be able to speak. This has only been available for a short time, but is mandatory. We don't have that service in SA.
The interception is also very interesting because a provider like Skype refuses to provide this to say, the USA gov. How will SA intelligence service force Skype or any other offshore operation to abide by these new laws?

I see the PSTN or Cell phone remaining for some time, and users just using these new Voip products for savings. If everybody started using Skype for their calls, but hung onto the landlines just in case, Telkom would not only loose revenue, but may stating loosing money because they will be forced to provide the emergency access!

I view interception by government in the virtual realm exactly the same as I do in the real world. Asking me to make phone calls transparent is like asking me to build a see through house so that they can be sure I don't do anything illegal.

They can go to hell. I will encrypt even if it becomes illegal. I am of the conviction that my right to privacy is above any government or person.

My privacy is mine.
