VOIP & MyWireless?

I used Skype a while back but it didnt perform well. There was a lot of breaking up and funny sounding artifacts. It could be something with my PC but I know what part of the sound stream problems were caused by the network performance.

So I shelved it for a while.

Then I installed the new firmware. Of course, since Skype does not like dropped packets, it would naturally perform better with the new firmware due to the reduced packet loss.

So I tried it last night in the exact same conditions as before - the only difference being the firmware version - and it seemed to perform a little better. At the moment, my tower (36PTA) is having speed issues so I will try it again when things are on the ball again.

Moral of the story, it performs ok to keep up a conversation (obviously depending on the other end and congestion/contntion etc etc)

I dont think it will be viable using the initial/default (old) firmware or even between MyWireless users though. It seems you need an ADSL/ISDN party on one end for it to be useful.

About the delay, remember that cellphones have about 400-500ms delay. Considering that your avg ping is well below that for local, you will not notice a delay.

Does that answer your question?

VOIP is planned by Sentech - it's one of thier next phases. Least ways, that's what I read at Itweb.

At the moment, Sentech is not allowed to carry voice data using technologies like VoIP - such is Telkoms monopoly. As soon as those laws change, the African market is open, but still only to select companies. Pretty much like the 3 cellular networks we currently have.

I'd like to see another internet "icon" catch on - your VoIP number - coming soon to your business card !

I currently have both an old and new firmware IPW modem.
A day and a half of testing and I can conclusively give
you another opinion:
Skype or ANY other time sensitive application (i.e. multimedia) will
be pathetic using the new ver. 5 firmware.

I dont get it.. it has less packet loss. It could be dependent on other factors. I must say though, my testing was not conclusive by any stretch and it was only about 20% better but still not good. I will test with the old and new at a later stage. For now, we will accept dbnnet's results as fact.

greedyflyza,
At first I too was impressed with ver 5 (i.e. Packet loss = The real enemy),
However something was out of wack... so I decided to use two modems as the only
way to get to the bottom of this.
I think that ProAsm's statement "erratic pings and crummy streaming" actually
tells it all. From what he has said, this mismatch between the tower’s v.4 and
the modem’s v.5 has caused some form or erratic delay.
i.e. a 15 minute RealAudio test conducted repeatedly, would consistently
loose 3 minutes (20%) on ver 5. vs ver 4.

As to the VOIP mentioned above -- AFAIK this is a long term goal to be used with the Corporate/business wireless service. It does not use Mywireless - it's a completely different architecture.

Look at www.ipwireless.com - same technology and it's on the cards/on offer.

I have an inferiority complex. But it's only a little one.

Hey dude, I think you've tangled with one buffaol too many, on this forum, we only need to be told things once.
Is there a reason for the same post appearing 3 times in a row?
I'm staring to see that inferiority complex as small man Syndrome

I am using both Skype and Messenger, and both are working very well, Like using the telephone, BUT the person on the other end has a 1.4 MBit line to that might also make a difference.

Save a horny friend........

SETUP: Durban Mal Park(36) 53% sig 128k | D-Link Tri-Mode Dual Band Wireless router and a PCI 108Mbps wireless card :)

I get fairly good results on MSN, Skype and Yahoo audio from MW, as long as the other end is not also MW. MSN and Skype will work even if the other end is as slow as a 56k dial-up.

I have used Skype, i have had a confrence with 4 other people and it was perfect. I chat alot to a guy in the states and have had no real problems all in all if u are calling within Sa u will be perfect. Thats with my experience though.

Fantasy is what people want, reality is what they need.

Try teamspeak, I've used it on both my isdn and schleptech MyMoneyless. It's way better than any other chat proggie I've tried and works realy good even with 10 people connected.
