Hey guys,

Now my aunt and my gran live in the same complex yet still phone each other 75448 times a day. Now thats fine, but what I don't accept is the fact that they are sending large sums of money to telskum. So I'm setting up a wireless network, but now I'd like them to be able to use voip to call. Anyone know of decent software that will work WITHOUT being connected to the web? Ideally something as simple as skype, but I checked skype HAS to be online.

Thanks,

Patrick

The easiest option IMHO would be to either do the following

Option A)
Purchase 2 VoIP phones
Grandstream BT102 http://www.miro.co.za/stage/intranet/datasheet.php?id=132
About R850 excl VAT or cheaper still

Option B)
Sipura 2000 FXS Device (IP device) connect to an analog phone to it http://www.sipura.com/products/spa2000.htm
R 650 exclu VAT

Option C) Cheapest -> Its Free
Install Xlite Softphone in a Direct IP to IP dial

Requires microphone & speakers connected to audio card

Although it's just a theory of mine - I haven't actually tried it yet... take one of those regular older telkom phones and just butcher the hand set. Or just convert RJ11 to 2x audio jacks - 1=mic, 1=spk. But of course, set the PC speaker sound to the right level!

Just be prepared for a letter from Mr Candiotes or one of his minions explaining that you are breaking the law, the Telkom and the SNO have exclusive rights to all telecoms services in SA, and that if you do not cease such illegal activities within seven days Telkom will have no choice but to pursue legal action in order to recover lost revenue.

Simplest solution is a taught string with a tin can on each end ...

Ok, more seriously, does Telkom still supply a point to point tie-line?

Just a thought, if they are in the same complex, maybe a private tie-line coukd be installed via the building's distribtion box?

Telkom stopped doing tie-lines and exchange connections... they found that they make more money if they don't! bastards!

It isn't against the law, as long as you don't cross a public domain... like a road or park.

Am thinking of installing this at my home as well.

Go have a shufti at this thread over at the Smoothwall community and see what they all do with their servers... the fun starts at the 9th posting...
