IS there any VOIP software to use on a LAN, I don't want to use my Internet CAP on voip for obvious reasons. I want some software that I can use to call other PC's in my home, from the upstairs computers to the computers downstairs , I need the program to only work locally as I already have skype for calls outside my home network.

I downloaded asterisk at home -2.8, I don't Know if this will work,Please advise. Is this for Linux or can it be used on Windows, I extracted the file and there's a whole lot of other compressed files.

Their are a few threads on this already.

Skype will work on your LAN. It needs an internet connection for presence, but once a call is connected it will run peer to peer. If both clients are on a LAN then your call will remain on the LAN, assuming no firewall restrictions etc.

will skype use up my internet cap, or will local traffic be used

assuming you can ping both PC's on your LAN it will remain local.

If you want to confirm that it is infact remaining local do this.

Open Skype > Tools > Options > Advanced > check display technical info.

Call your LAN PC. Place your cursor over the "Person" image on the call tab.

You will get all the technical info re your connection. Look for Roundtrip. that is the Round trip time for your skype call. On a LAN you will get about 20ms (before someone points it out your lan runs quicker than that but skype adds codec decoding time to the roundtrip). On local ADSL-ADSL skype calls you will get approx 80 - 100ms and ADSL To international 300-600ms.

If you still dont believe its running on your lan, make a call to your lan PC then disconnect from the internet. The call will continue, but you wont be able to make another. Skype requires the internet to access its presence servers to initiate the call.

is there any new software out or software that hasn't already been listed above that can be used on a lan that doesn't have an internet connection?
