Hi guys.

We currently are looking for a VOIP provider.

ATM we have a 3CX PBX set up and would like to continue using it.

Currently using this to compare providers but i see none of them seem to support 3CX. Im pretty sure SIP is a standard protocol and we shouldn't have issues but i would just like someone to confirm.

My guess is all I need to look for is a VOIP Provider that supports SIP Trunking?

The 3CX does support SIP and is licensed by the number of G729 channels you require, just be sure you have a stable broadband connection to carry the concurrent calls. Here is something i wrote the other day which has a segment that explains how to calculate your broadband capacity on G729 calls. http://www.ee.co.za/article/voip-good-bad-ugly.html

Just to refresh my memory... we have to license 3CX for the number of concurrent calls (channels) as well as pick a provider that supports said number of channels (or at least the ability to purchase extra channels)

Currently we have 2 ADSL lines on premises. We will be looking at running a third ONLY for VOIP but may have the VOIP fail over to one of our other lines if the VOIP line goes down for whatsoever reason.

Yes the 3CX is licensed for the number of G729 calls you require and the VoIP provider will give you SIP account that supports that number of concurrent calls. As for the DSL , its not really a good business option for VoIP, its unstable and you will experience issues.
By the fact that you already have 2 DSL lines would indicate that you are quite a big data user so probably the best option is to scrap the DSL and go the fibre route , this will give you good quality voice calls . If you PM me your GPS co-ords i will advise you of what services are available in your area.

We Are actually a school. We have 2 lines mostly for redundancy. Majority of trafic runs over 1 line anyway.

We would honestly love a fibre connection. Not sure if it will fit in our budget but will see what you can come up with for me.

Try diginet or fibre. ADSL is just a problem with VOIP. Especially if you want to run a non-residential use with more than 1 call.

- ADSL is asymmetric
- ADSL has high latency
- ADSL jitter can be a problem

etc etc. Ideally get someone who deals with hosted FreePBX as that is a hosted PBX which is not as costly as the proprietary 3CX. You need to be more clued up on setting up your own FreePBX installation, or rather get a hosted solution. This is cheaper than 3CX usually, and because it is hosted service is much better as the are far less call outs required.

I am not sure what your budget is but I'd avoid ADSL if you want to run voip, been there, done it and cancelled. Rather maybe check with Internet Solutions they have a new fiber offering with good pricing ,see below

no Fibre in our area (or any areas around it)
Diginet was mentioned before and is also just as scarce apparently.

We manage all our own servers (of which we have 5 physical and about 10 virtual) We already have 3cx set up and working with 2 G729 licenses.

Call outs are done by myself and my college who are both in-house support / System Admins

We have a pretty hefty budget as you can probably tell from the above (thought fibre was a lot more expensive still). However we just happen to be amongst all those other unlucky IT guys that just happen to be a little to far from any available fibre. This is the reason we are running 2 ADSL lines already. We have been debating getting a 3rd for some time. with VOIP we may even consider a 4th...

Trust me guys if we had the option of fibre we would hop on it pretty damn quickly....

Edit:

We are also looking into having a 3g failover. As we are within about 300m of a cell tower. incoming calls will come from our tekom line and I think outgoing will be through our VOIP Provider.

We are probably looking at about 3 maybe 4 max outgoing calls.
