IS there a local VOIP provider that can give me a local number and provide SMS support? I want to be able to receive SMSes on the account - ideally have the SMSes forwarded to email.
It could give me a couple of advantages:
- Sign up for incontact at the banks using this number - then thieves can't do a SIM-swop to gain access to my account
- Use it for 2 factor GMail authentication - once again if a SIM-swop is performed they can't access my e-mail (this recently happened to a friend - she had 2 factor authentication on her account but they still managed to gain access to her GMail). We're not sure exactly how this happened but made me more aware of my own security.
- Use it to sign up for accounts, register at places etc. This way I would be able to filter out incoming SMSes in my mailbox that I don't like.
Obviously for the security reasons mentioned above, it would help if the provider is not susceptible to the same problems as the networks are (i.e. allow SIM-swops too easily).
I have a FNBConnect account but it doesn't seem as if it supports incoming messages any longer? And in any case, it still ends up on my phone in the FNB app (or at least, it used to). The PC software is no longer available as far as I could tell and they do not support messaging with other SIP software.
