HI all, I'm brand new and have no doubt that this is a very basic ? but pls bare with me, just got a billion voip wireless router, this voip concept is new to me but I am keen to make calls through the router. If I connect both the phone & dsl lines into the router ( I want to run my phone through the router) then what type of phone do I need that then connect to the router?? can it be any normal phone or does it need to be a 'skype' phone or what?? I am keen on getting a portable phone set (gigaset or something) but dunno if it'll work, any ideas, recommendations would be cool, thanks.

VoIP

Most VoIP routers will come with an FXS interface to plug a normal analog telephone into.

If it has both an FXS and FXO, you can have pass-thru to your Telkom line.

Basically, FXS is used for analog devices such as telephones and fax machines. FXO ports are for lines. You would run a cable from the wall to an FXO port on the router.

If you have FXS ports, just setup a SIP account on the router and use a normal telephone to make VoIP calls. I use a cordless Panasonic telephone on my router's FXS port. With pass-thru, you can still use the Telkom line if your internet goes down for whatever reason.

For SIP, you will need a SIP account. There are a few people offering VoIP accounts (SIP) life telfree and yakyak. I use yakyak.co.za and have an 087 number and a 011 number routed to me. Works perfectly and I use iBurst at home on my router. 100% telkom free voice calls and internet :)

Hope this makes a little more sense. VoIP, once configured properly, works perfectly. This depends on your Broadband though, but i've had no issues at all. I work from home and havent had any issues during peak Internet times.

Can one use a voip route such that; when a normal call comes through the line, the router reroutes it to your sip account ?

Secondly, can the router re-reroute to an 087 number , though i get the feeling i am asking the same question twice

You can set the Dial plan priority to to change from Voip to normal PSTN line and visa versa. What do you mean by routing a PSTN line to a Sip account?

Yes, you can forward to a 087 number as long as youre dial plan is setup correctly...
