I have broadband fibre and a VOIP service with an ISP. I use an app to connect to use the voice service. This hasn't worked at home because the sip keeps dropping requiring me to register again. There are times when it seems to have a good connection. I have a feeling that this may have to do with my cell signal sometimes reverting to Edge. I have a Velop Linksys router and have ensured that the SIP is checked to allow connections to take place. Any advice!

Hi there. I might be able to offer some advice. But it would help if I understand a few attributes of your setup as it is at the moment. You mention that it is a fibre service, yet you talk about cell signal.

Question I have.
  1. Are you using the app on your phone (Like zioper or whatever) to connect to the PABX?
  2. If 1 is yes, does your problem manifest when you transverse between your WiFi and your mobile broadband?
  3. Is there no other device that uses the SIP account ?
  4. When you say SIP is allowed on your home router, are you referring to ALG?
Some additional thoughts.

It has been my experience that the only real technology that works with SIP and mobile broadband is LTE, since all the others (3G included) is asynchronous resulting in very poor upload speeds, especial if you have;
  • more than one phone line in use
  • inefficient codec in use (G.711 or the like)
If you were to use a G.729 codec with your mobile app, you would typically get away with a quarter of the usual bandwidth as compared to say G.711.

Also check if your SIP provider allows for concurrent registrations. I know we allow it for our clients by default but it is sometimes required to be disabled, causing similar behavior you are describing. If you migrate to another network, the registration might not be successful coming from a new IP since the old one might linger.
