Hi everyone. So we would like to switch to a cheap Voip service, but one which would allow us to use our current telkom number. Any suggestions?

Hi

You have 2 options.
option 1 - Keep your Telkom phone line for incoming calls and use Voip for outgoing calls.

option 2- Port your number to a voip provider, and use voip for both incoming and outgoing calls.

Be aware that you need a decent internet connection for voip to sound decent.

We want to use option 2. Problem is that I cant find a provider who allows us to do this. Most providers gives us a new number.

Port your Telkom Number

Hi

I can assist with please.

I will send you a pm with my details.

We can even set your outgoing CLI to be your Telkom number, so that it shows up on the callees phone that its you.

Mmm, interesting. Can you tie into a vumatel fibre line, or is it purely internet based?
What equipment is needed client side?

No idea if they can help, but we use Euphoria for our VOIP.

You do need a decent internet connection though. Which means a shared connection isn't always ideal (e.g. outgoing voice drop outs why you're doing online backups for example.)

mikrotik with prioritisation of voice traffic over outbound files ;)

The short answer is yes we can run it over your Vumatel fibre providing it has access to the internet. The long answer is we'd like to run some tests on it first before we do that because we have discovered that not all fibre is created equally.

There are also some providers who will dedicate you a 2nd VLAN over your existing line to portion off to voice. I'm not sure if Vumatel accommodate that, but we could work with that if they do.

And someone that knows how to set it up. Mikrotik is not trivial.

Yes we have done this quite successfully with Mikrotik. We can also use Vibe enabled devices where applicable. Obviously single ended QoS is a best effort affair, so if you completely saturate the line the QoS can only do so much. It also won't compensate for a poor quality line.
