Could someone explain these terms in better detail for me, please?

Here are my thoughts and understanmding - please correct if needed!

VoIP is 'voice over the internet protocol' - basically voice travelling over the data network. It can be used with a standard phone - and the voice is simply converted and transmitted via the network to the otherside - where it is converted back again into voice.

Now IP Telephoney USES the VoIP technology - with only one difference : the IP phone addition. This is the 'computer' itself and the voice is already in IP when the receiver is lifted. In other words, it does not need to be converted. The other benefit of this is that applications can be run on it - allowing one to book meeting rooms, order food etc etc

A PBX seems identical - with the exception of the applications. It does the calls and everything via the LAN.

My question is why the added cost of IPT, when one could use standard phones with VoIP technology or even PBXs? Am I missing something other than the software benefit ... ?

Hi there, Doesnt look like anyone is going to answer your question ..
Ok if you have standard telephones on ur desk the voice gets sent as voice so you need to put something in to convert that voice to a data packet if you utilizing voip. PBX vendors are making loads of money on IP costings in a pbx.. it looks like the year 2k from where i am sitting. You get inexpensive very good gateways that fit into the voip infrastructure without any heavy cost on the PBX.

Make sense? Did i answer your question?

List of Cheapest Voip Providers for South Africa

For standard VOIP: www.lowratevoip.com is the best provider which I found untill now; under R0.1 (9,3c) for normal landline calls and under R.90 for cellphones. They also support SIP protocol which is implemented by a lot of VOIP phones.

The quality is very good, same like a normal landline call.
The trick is to use an adsl account which is using the undersea SAT3 cable and not the Satellite. I use a saix account, it's a little bit of lag on an IS account.

To send SMS's I use www.smsdiscount.com, it does cost only R0.1 (10c) per SMS.

Have fun.

The TDM PBX with VOIP Gateway is the older way of VOIP. You use your existing, either digital or analogue extensions to make normal voice connections to the PABX, where the gateway in the PABX convert it to data packages.

You are 100% correct about the software but there are more advantages on IPT.

IPT allows you to only have 1 cabling infrastructure for your data and voice network. The connecting of data with incoming calls also allows call centres to get much more information like customer history etc. before actually answering the call. Integration between CRM and Telephony is very easy. You could move around from one desk to another and carry your IP phone with you, where it will automatically keep its existing extension number. Your IT person can actually maintain your Data and voice network now whereas previously you needed a PABX vendor for almost every little thing you wanted to do on your voice network. These are actually only a few advantages.

Lastly, there is actually on the Wireless IP Phones going to be a handover between the existing GSM cellular network and when you walk into you office, it will actually automatically go over to your WLAN. This is also going to provide you with more cost savings.
