Could someone explain these terms in better detail for me, please?
Here are my thoughts and understanmding - please correct if needed!
VoIP is 'voice over the internet protocol' - basically voice travelling over the data network. It can be used with a standard phone - and the voice is simply converted and transmitted via the network to the otherside - where it is converted back again into voice.
Now IP Telephoney USES the VoIP technology - with only one difference : the IP phone addition. This is the 'computer' itself and the voice is already in IP when the receiver is lifted. In other words, it does not need to be converted. The other benefit of this is that applications can be run on it - allowing one to book meeting rooms, order food etc etc
A PBX seems identical - with the exception of the applications. It does the calls and everything via the LAN.
My question is why the added cost of IPT, when one could use standard phones with VoIP technology or even PBXs? Am I missing something other than the software benefit ... ?
