I am in a bit of a pickle I have a traditional pbx with an analig phone systems...

it is giving me hassles but so i want to replace it..

I cannot rewire the entire office with CAT at the moment. Is it possible to build a asterisk or paif box that plugs into the tekom trunks and my internal analog Which i can upgrade later to use vi op internally and the lastly have a hybrid telkom and viop on the external leg ?

any ideas on the hardware I would need

Hi,

My suggestion would be to phase out the analogue based PABX slowly.

It is indeed a costly and time consuming exercise to move over to CAT 5/6 and replace all your existing handsets with IP phones.

My suggestion would be to start by adding an FXO gateway onto your existing PBX platform and immediately begin benefiting from the VoIP by reducing call costs.

You could even consider porting your existing telephone numbers to the VoIP provider and reducing costs further.

Once you have this in place it is very easy to migrate to an IPPBX system as your VoIP provider can just change over from FXO gateway to a direct SIP trunk.

By doing this you can generate a saving which would give you some budget to spend on quality IP phones and a decent Network switch. :)

I concur with BitCo on this one. What was not mentioned was how big the old system is ? How many extensions ? If it is small i would create a system that would slowly 'migrate' to a hosted PBX solution, if large to an 'onsite' IP PBX.
With regard to your lack of LAN CAT 5/6, i presume you are using Wi-Fi ? There are Wi-Fi desktop IP phones available or you could even use a free softphone on the PC's.
If you give me a little more info, i will gladly assist you with a solution.

15 phones lines, 15 computers all hardwired on cat5 100

We are toying with upgrading in the future to a 1gb land and using the current lan for the ip telephone wiring.

The problem is our current PBX is scatty.. so we are looking at upgrading the interal network frist and leaving the telkom Trunks..

Give fat-budgie a call. They can use your current infrastructure and you can still keep your pc's attached to the network :)

Their system brings a gigabit network down to 100meg but in your case there would be no difference.

They also do all the rest of the stuff you want.

Ok , 15 extensions is ideal size for hosted PBX, the big advantage is that you require voice recording and the host server will be able to take care of this, unless you want to archive the voice logs for years, then it would be necessary to have a separate server.
Not sure if its a good idea to keep the Telkom lines, gateway the PBX and use the savings to pay for your IP phones and hosting fees as you slowly migrate

How does viop hosted work with incoming lines at we have always had 10 telecom lines so wecould have 8 concurrent calls
1 fax
1 adsl
8 voice

Hi There,
Get the Voip providers involved. For personal use I use Otel and I have been impressed with their service and the quality.

They offer everything that you need.
I have also used the 3CX softphone on the laptop which works well for me.

You just need to make sure that the data connection to the VoIP provider is large enough to carry the equivalent of 8 voice calls. It's best to dedicate a link to voice only.

I concur with Morkans on the issue of last mile connectivity, this is critical to the quality of your service, I have access to quality last mile, fibre, dedicated copper, wireless & microwave, if you PM me your GPS co-ords i will gladly advise on availabillity.

Hi Guys,

I also concur with the point listed about last mile access being key to the success of a hosted PBX.

BitCo has our own last mile network made up of our own private Microwave and fibre connectivity.
We offer Voice & data over a single link with a guaranteed operational up-time and detailed SLA agreement.

In the case of your specific requirement I would recommend a BitCo Metro Ethernet Connection over Wireless with 15 X Hosted PBX extensions including Call recording and web Based Telephone management system.

I suggest you port your telephone numbers and eliminate the PSTN lines.

Based on the fact you have 10 X Analogue lines + ADSL Line, our pricing would be very competitive and overall you would achieve a significant saving.

if you would like some detailed pricing or a site survey to be done, please don't hesitate to contact [email protected]

Regards,

BitCo
