is voip possible with local only badwidth? if so how? thanx
 
The central VOIP server you are using will have to be hosted on a local server.

Therefor services like Skype and MSN Messanger will not work as they are centrally hosted overseas.
But .. if you want to run a VOIP server at one site, and have the other sites use it, that is more than possible.
And .. then only people you will be able to VIOP with are the ones useing your VOIP server.

You could find a company doing this already that also link to and international VOIP server to get out using their network [and pay them for the service].
 
You also get routers that can talk to each other without the use of a sip server.
 
i was tihnking more of a simple service like skype to call my friends overseas but i don't have local bandwidth. are there no local skype type services? if not i sense a gap in the market
 
Yeah

A gap that will always be there until the cost of international bandwidth comes down...
Someone has to pay for the overseas connection.

Even if it was for local only... we all know the cost of connecting a local server to the net.
Skype would work for local only calling over local only connections AFAIK.

Yes it is, but you will only be able to make local calls over voip via a local sip server.

see mywife.co.za , get an 087 number and away you go!
 
I read an article sometime last year stating that you can call a 087 number from a telscum line as there is no interconection agreements between telscum and the voip service providers.

Has this changed or is it stil 087 to 087 calls ??
 
Does anyone know if there is a way to get the text chat part of skype to work off local bandwidth? Never mind the VOIP part...
 
I've been thinking about this. I was thinking something along these lines:

Both people enable port forwarding.
Upload their IPs somewhere local...dunno maybe IRC on shadowfire.
Use a direct connect VOIP app.
Chat on local with buddy.:cool:

The Upload/connect part would obviously have to be automated, but that should not be a problem.

The direct communication between the parties always takes the shortest path. As long as the two end devices are not behind NAT they will talk to each other directly. If you are behind NAT then you will be going through a supernode that is most likely offshore... No one can afford to have their machine running as a supernode locally.

I think that skype still needs to use an overseas server to sign into the network but i'm not sure of the details on that.
 
What about Teamspeak :P

The SA Teamspeaks I've seen are hosted overseas...even though they have .coza addresses.

If somebody knows of a local one though...would be usefull.
