This looks like something fun, the VW (beach) buggy reborn! Hopefully they built it!

Volkswagen ID Buggy Concept

Volkswagen introduced the next member of the ID concept family at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show - the ID Buggy. Drawing inspiration from the classic Californian dune buggies of the 60s, the ID Buggy shows the versatility of the modular electric drive matrix (MEB) and puts the fun in functional.

ID Buggy is at once futuristic and retro. The MEB chassis integrates a 62kWh lithium-ion battery into the floor and a 201-horsepower electric motor in the rear to give it an expected range of 155 miles on the WLTP cycle. The minimalistic design-no doors or roof on this two-seater-gives drivers the purest experience of classic beach cruising.

Like the dune buggies of the 60s, ID Buggy is extremely versatile. All buggies from the 60s featured a high degree of modular variability-based on the chassis of the legendary Beetle with a four-cylinder boxer engine running at the rear. Small-series manufacturers stretched a body made of fiberglass over the chassis and engine of the Beetle, thus writing automotive history. The same versatility is possible with ID Buggy-while the ID Buggy concept car is a pure 2-seater; it can also be converted to a 2+2-seater and an additional electric motor could be added to the front axle in order to make four-wheel drive possible. In addition, the BUGGY's modular design allows for the composite upper body to be detached from the MEB chassis, opening up a world of possibilities for third-party manufacturers, as the original Meyers Manx kit did for the first buggies.

Exterior

Like the classic Beetle and Bus, ID Buggy has no need for a grille, and yet the summer cruiser is instantly recognizable as a Volkswagen. The prominently raised hood, fenders and tail end hint at the concept's off-road chops, while three-dimensional oval LED headlights and taillights, an LED VW logo, and a body that seems to float above the chassis lend an air of approachability.

The floating effect is created by the use of two colors next to each other. The top half of the car-most notably the striking fenders and shoulders-is painted in matte Fern Green, while the bottom portion is painted in a textured Grey Tech Blue. The green part visually floats above the dark blue area.

ID Buggy is equipped properly for an all-terrain vehicle. It features standard 18-inch wheels and BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A® off-road tires (255/55 at front and 285/60 at rear). A solid aluminum underbody guard ensures that the front axle and ancillaries are not damaged during off-road driving, and the aluminum side sill panel assumes the function of an additional underbody guard. Should another vehicle need a tow or should the BUGGY itself be incapacitated, two robust red steel eyelets are integrated in the bumpers.

The reinforced windscreen frame and the Targa bar, which is also open at the side, provides rollover support. There are no doors and no roof, but a black tarp can be stretched between the windscreen frame and the Targa bar as a sun shield or as light weather protection.

The open concept car is 160.0 in long, 74.4 in wide and 57.6 in high, featuring short front and rear overhangs (27.0 and 28.6 in respectively). The wheelbase is 104.3 in and ground clearance is 9.4 in.

Interior

The ID Buggy's minimalist interior is characterized by easy handling and waterproof materials. All elements surrounding the exterior are a continuation of the body, painted in Fern Green, while the majority of the interior trim is finished in a robust Grey Tech Blue soft-touch paint. The driver and passenger sit on seats with headrests and belt guides integrated into the backrests, while the floor plate is outfitted with anti-slip knobs.

Despite the shortened wheelbase of the concept car, passengers have an unusually large amount of space. This is due to the ID. family's compact electric drive and axles arranged further to the outside. This open space always provides room that is about one class above that of comparable cars with a conventional drivetrain.

The minimalistic cockpit has been designed to match the character and design of the ID Buggy. With the "Hey you" display in the cockpit, the concept car greets its driver and draws attention to the fact that it is ready for operation. A hexagonal steering wheel, covered with water-repellent Nappa leather, features touch controls in the crossbar, and a digital instrument cluster keeps the dash uncluttered.

Electric drive

The zero-emissions drivetrain of the ID Buggy is made up of the electric motor integrated in the rear axle, power electronics, a single-speed gearbox, the high-voltage flat battery (62 kWh) arranged in the car floor to save space, and the additional units integrated in the vehicle front end. The electric motor delivers 201 horsepower and maximum torque of 228 lb-ft from standstill. This means that the electric vehicle always provides enough power on the rear axle, even off-road. With full acceleration on paved slopes, the concept car sprints from zero to 62 mph in just 7.2 seconds. The maximum speed is electronically controlled at 99 mph.

As an alternative to the rear-wheel-drive layout, it is also possible to fit a second electric motor in the front axle of the ID Buggy. In this case, an "electric propshaft" would distribute the power of the 4Motion® four-wheel drive between the front and rear axles in fractions of a second.

Regardless of rear drive or four-wheel drive, power electronics control the high-voltage energy flow between the engine and battery. The power electronics convert direct current (DC) stored in the battery into alternating current (AC). The on-board electronics are supplied with 12V via a DC/DC converter. The position of the battery in the vehicle floor gives ID Buggy a lower center of gravity for better handling.

Volkswagen Resurrects Beach Buggy

The iconic Volkswagen Beach Buggy is back! This time, however, it's electric-powered. Meet the Volkswagen ID Buggy concept which was revealed at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.

Heritage is one of those traits which Volkswagen understands well. Look at the VW Kombi and while the latest version is a far cry from the original hippy wagon, we love them both dearly. Remember the Volkswagen Beetle-based beach buggies? Light, fun to drive and effortlessly simple, they represented endless summers and good times.

Now, for the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen has revived the Beach Buggy with the new all-electric ID Buggy Concept. Like the forthcoming ID electric range, the ID Buggy also rides on Volkswagen's all-new modular electric car platform called MEB. The Volkswagen Group is banking on the new MEB platform being the key to cost-effective and affordable electric cars. Should these be a success, then low-volume specialised products like the ID Buggy could become a reality.

The Volkswagen ID Buggy Concept features a 62 kWh battery located in the middle of the car, mounted low for a low centre of gravity, which, in turn, improves handling. Volkswagen claims the battery compound forms part of the structure and therefore adds rigidity. Keeping with the tradition of the Beach Buggies of yesteryear, the Volkswagen ID Buggy features its motor in the rear and is connected to a single-speed gearbox. Volkswagen has said there is provision for a second motor operating the front axle, which would give the ID Buggy Concept 4x4 capability.

With a claimed range of around 250 km and a claimed 0-100 kph time of 7.2 seconds, the Volkswagen ID Buggy Concept sounds like a fantastic and fun way to cruise around. While it remains a concept, for now, we'd love to see it come to life!

Volkswagen ID Buggy concept previews fun EV off-roader

Inspired by the 1960s Meyers Manx, all-electric buggy has a range of 155 miles and can reach 99mph

Volkswagen has reinvented the 1960s Beetle-based dune buggy with the electric ID Buggy – and it wants to allow small-scale manufacturers to produce their own versions of the machine.

The ID Buggy revives the spirit of the Meyers Manx dune buggy and is built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB electric architecture, which will first be put into production with the ID hatch later this year.

VW design chief Klaus Bischoff told Autocar the intent of the machine is to prove that electric cars can be fun. He added that the ID Buggy will eventually be offered for sale, saying the concept presented at the Geneva show is “70% production ready”.

The ID Buggy features a 202bhp, 228lb ft rear-mounted electric motor, offering 0-62mph in 7.2 sec and a top speed of 99mph. Power comes from a 62kWh battery, giving a range of around 155 miles on the WLTP cycle.

The rear-wheel-drive drivetrain echoes the Beetle drivetrain from the original buggies, but Volkswagen said that, as with other ID models, a motor could be fitted to the front axle to provide all-wheel-drive.

The Buggy is 4063mm long, 1890mm wide and 1463mm tall, making it marginally shorter, wider and lower than the ID hatch. The buggy has a 2650mm wheelbase and a ground clearance of 2400mm, and sits on 18-inch wheels in large off-road tyres. The concept version is a two-seater, but two rear seats could potentially be added.

Bischoff called the Buggy a “modern, retro-free interpretation.” He added: “We wanted something that has the spirit of the original buggy, but it also had to be a fresh, new design.”

The large front bumper and round LED headlights echo the Meyers Manx buggy, with the bodywork dropping at the sides. The front windscreen is freestanding, while the high rear end features a Targa-style roll bar.

There are no doors, with the side instead dipping to make for easier access, and no roof. A detachable cover had been developed for the concept to protect from sun or rain. The eventual production version is likely to have a more secure detachable cover for the roof and sides.

The minimalist interior makes extensive use of durable, waterproof materials, including waterproof cloth seats with drains at the the bottom to ensure water does not pool in the seats.

Virtually all the controls are built into the hexagonal steering wheel. A controller stalk on the side of the wheel is used to select drive and engage the handbrake. There is a small digital information screen located behind the wheel, but there is no built-in infotainment or autonomy systems.

“The Buggy is all about going back to basics,” said Bischoff. “We wanted to show that there will be a place for simple, fun cars in the future.”

With no infotainment system, music can be played through built-in speakers using a smartphone connected via Bluetooth.

The car’s mixed aluminium, steel and plastic composite bodywork is self-supporting and can be removed from the MEB chassis. Bischoff said the aim is to external firms to develop their own bodywork, with VW either providing MEB chassis or building it to those designed.

He added: “The original buggy was developed by small companies using the Beetle, and we’re excited to see what firms can come up with. There is a long history of Volkswagen cars being turned into amazing machines by other firms.”

Volkswagen has previously revealed that it wants to make its MEB platform available for rival manufacturers to use.

While the ID Buggy is a relatively niche machine, Bischoff said that the firm will be able justify producing it in relatively small number due because it can benefit from the economies of scale of the other ID cars on the MEB platform. “We need to sell hundreds of thousands of something to justify production,” said Bischoff. “We can do that with the ID hatch, and that allows us to make machines like the Buggy too.”

There is no firm date for the Buggy to go into production, it will likely be after the more mainstream ID concepts that have been revealed. Following the hatch will come production machines based on the Cross SUV, Buzz van and Vizzion saloon. Another SUV, and a luxury ‘ID Lounge’ are also planned.

It will likely go into production after the previously revealed ID concepts: the hatch, Crozz SUV, Buzz MPV, Vizzion saloon and a largely SUV.

The Buggy is part of Volkswagen’s ‘reinvention’ of some of its classic models, which also includes the VW Transporter-inspired Buzz. Bischoff has previously confirmed the firm is evaluating an ID-based reinvention of the Beetle, and he said several other similar models are being considered.

As well as showcasing the ID. Buggy at Geneva, Volkswagen is also previewing its plans for a mobile charging station service, which it says is close to production and planned to go into service in 2020.

The system works on the principle of a powerbank, similar to that used to charge smartphones, albeit on a much larger and powerful scale, with charging capacity of up to 360kWh. Volkswagen said the system will allow for charging points to be installed in temporary locations where there is demand, such as music festivals, and could potentially use recycled batteries from old ID models.

It’s back! Volkswagen unwraps new dune buggy concept

Towards the end of January 2019, Volkswagen dropped two teaser images of a new dune buggy concept. And now the Wolfsburg-based firm has fully revealed its all-electric ID Buggy concept at the Geneva International Motor Show.

VW bills the ID Buggy concept – which rides on the automaker’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB) architecture – as a “zero-emissions, high-tech vehicle for summer, on the beach or in the city”.

A lithium-ion battery is integrated into the vehicle’s floor, supplying power to a 150 kW electric motor sited at the rear. Interestingly, VW says an additional electric motor in the front axle is “also conceivable” in order to realise an all-wheel drive with an “electric propshaft”.

Inspired by the Californian dune buggies of the 1960s, the ID Buggy concept does away with a fixed roof and doors, while the minimalist interior features waterproof materials. While the concept is a two-seater, Volkswagen says the vehicle could also be converted to a 2+2 layout.

The composite body is fashioned from a mix of aluminium, steel and plastic, with the upper body itself fairly easily detached from the MEB chassis. This, says VW, is a “clear signal” to small series manufacturers and start-ups that the brand is happy to open up to “external producers” and allow them to build a new-era dune buggy based on the concept…

Here's Volkswagen's All-Electric Dune Buggy and It's More Like an Old-School Buggy Than You'd Think

Volkswagen teased an all-electric dune buggy concept built on their new modular MEB platform and heavily inspired by ‘60's-era Beetle-based dune buggies like the famous Meyers Manx.

We’re now seeing it in all it’s bright green glory before it shows up at the Geneva Motor Show, and, excitingly, it’s got more in common with those old air-cooled Beetle-buggies than you’d think.

First, it’s actually rear-motor’d like the orginal dune buggies.

Sure, it’s an electric motor making 201 horsepower instead of an air-cooled flat-four making 50 hp if you’re lucky, but at least VW’s finally putting some motors in the right place.

That also means that, like an old Manx, it’s RWD, but now VW says there could be an option for an additional motor up front for AWD:

In this case, an “electric propshaft” would distribute the power of the 4Motion® four-wheel drive between the front and rear axles in fractions of a second.

The concept of the “electric propshaft” I think is a deeply strange way to describe the electrical connections between the motors.

I mean, I see the analogy they’re making, but comparing a bunch of electronic signals to a simple spinning rod just feels a little, uh, forced.

The big thing, though, that makes the ID. BUGGY a true successor to the original VW-based off-roaders has to do with how it’s built:

This idea, that you can have a ready-to-drive rolling chassis and pop bodies on and off at will is what gave birth to the once-huge VW-based kit car industry.

That original Type I Volkswagen design had such a chassis, and that gave the fundamental design incredible flexibility.

If Volkswagen is really able to recapture some of that with their new MEB platform, that has the potential to be a big deal in the future, possibly even heralding a new era of kit cars, if I can be so bold as to dream.

Now that we can see all of it, the design of the ID. BUGGY I think is very strong and fun.

It’s clearly taking cars like the Manx as a starting point, but it’s absolutely modern and not at all cloying or overly sentimental.

The lighting design is very clean and highly graphical, with circles circumscribing rectangles up front and X’s at the rear.

The headlamps are also not entirely integrated into the body, suggesting the old chrome, separate bullet-body lights of old.

No grille is needed, so it can keep the Manx-style shark-nose look, and the wave-like door-less side profile, which kicks up at the rear, works very well, especially with the two-tone design of upper colored areas and lower, inset black panels.

The interior is admirably clean and uncluttered, with all instruments in one LCD screen pod right in front of the driver.

Everything looks like it could withstand sand and water and vomit and just be hosed out and good to go the next day.

I really like this thing, and I think VW did a great job of capturing the essence of what a dune buggy should be.

I wish I could believe that something like this could make it into regular production, and you could just buy one from a VW dealer, but I just can’t believe that.

However, VW’s hinting about how bodies can be easily mounted to the MEB chassis does give me some hope that maybe, just maybe, VW will actually sell bare MEB chassis to companies (maybe even individuals?) and kit car-style bodies, including something like this, could be possible to buy.

I can dream, can’t I? Just like everyone who made a fake MG TD or a primer-gray Bradley GT on a rusty old VW pan in the mid-’80's.

Those people were dreamers, and maybe we can be, too. Again.

The beach buggy is back, with 21st century flavour!

Volkswagen is resurrecting an icon with the reveal of the ID. Buggy at the Geneva Motor Show this week.

While in most ways the concept is a modern interpretation of the classic beach buggy that became an icon in coastal towns around the world from the 1960s onwards, it boasts a completely modern architecture, being based around Volkswagen’s upcoming MEB platform for electric vehicles and, yes, boasting a 62kWh battery that allows it to cover a claimed 250km between charges.

It’s pretty quick too, thanks to a 148kW, rear-mounted electric motor that gets it from 0-100km/h in 7.2 seconds, and it’s also entirely possible to fit another electric motor upfront, transforming it into a four-wheel-drive.

In fact, this platform has plenty of scope for modification, and should the buggy actually reach production (which is looking rather likely), it will present an opportunity for start-up manufacturers to produce a wide range of custom vehicles. The show car is a two-seater, but 2+2 versions can easily be created and imagination is the limit really...

A true, weatherproof beach buggy

The concept that VW is presenting at Geneva is a true beach buggy in every sense of the word - it’s got no roof, no doors and a body that appears to float above the chassis.

Hope you’re not scared of rain, the ID. Buggy certainly isn’t - it has a weatherproof interior, this despite the fact that it’s also highly digitised. VW has however made provision for a tarp that can be stretched between the windscreen frame and Targa bar as a sun shield or for light weather protection.

Also guarding against the elements for beach and off-road driving are aluminium underbody and side guards, while standard BF Goodrich All-Terrain tyres will take you to those secluded spots.

The cabin is minimalistic yet advanced, with digital instruments and capacitive controls that react to touch, while phone and media functions are controlled via illuminated fields. Once you’re in gear and ready to go, the vehicle greets with a “Hey you” display.

The ID. Buggy isn’t the only retro reincarnation that Volkswagen is working on - there’s also a production version of the ID. Buzz concept on the cards, which harks back to the original ‘Type 1’ Kombi of the ‘50s. This ID. electric car family will also spawn a Golf-sized hatchback in 2020 as well as a crossover version and possibly even a saloon.

Volkswagen ID Buggy makes off-road debut at Pebble Beach

Electric concept has a 155-mile range and can hit 99mph; start-up e.Go Mobile could build production version

The Volkswagen ID Buggy concept has made its off-road dynamic debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance during Monterey Car Week in California, US.

Images show the Meyers Manx-inspired electric two-seater accelerating across a sandy beach and on static display with the original Beetle-based model from the 1960s.

First shown at the Geneva motor show in March, the ID Buggy is built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB electric architecture, which will first be put into production with the ID 3 hatchback later this year.

While a production version of the ID Buggy has yet to be confirmed, it is now being investigated. Low-volume, low-cost production start-up e.Go Mobile, which has become the first company to license the MEB platform for its own models, is in the running to engineer and build the ID Buggy on behalf of Volkswagen, according to Volkswagen sales and marketing boss Jürgen Stackmann.

Speaking at Geneva, Stackmann also confirmed that the ID Buggy was “feasible as you see it” for production. “It’s not a show car, it’s pre-designed for readiness”, he added on the machine, which may or may not wear a Volkswagen badge in production.

Meyers Manx-inspired electric dune chaser could reach production; we drive an early working prototype

Volkswagen is progressing ever faster towards a future of new electric-powered models under its recently created ID sub-brand.

The German company's plan, which is budgeted to cost up to €44 billion, have been meticulously conveyed with the unveiling of a series of six different concept cars over the past four years, the latest of which is the eye-catching ID Buggy - a likeable back-to-basics two-seater inspired by the classic Meyers Manx dune buggy.

The high-riding, battery-powered concept, which does without doors and a fixed roof, was conceived to inject some fun and flippery into the upcoming ID family. It also showcases the impressive modularity and versatility of Volkswagen’s MEB electric car platform, which will make its production debut next month underneath the new ID 3 family hatchback.

However, the ID Buggy is more than just for show. Volkswagen says it is genuinely serious about placing the machine into production as a low-volume addition to the future ID line-up. It has even taken the unusual step of seeking out possible partners capable of handling small-scale production, suggesting it could licence the MEB platform to companies interested in building an electric modern-day recreation of the Manx.

While there’s no official confirmation whether production will happen yet, the good news is that the one and only ID Buggy in existence right now is driveable - albeit at low speeds only.

It attracts more attention than a scantily clad supermodel at a football match as we cruise down 17-Mile Drive outside Monterey in California. It turns heads everywhere it goes, attracting a battery of smartphones as crowds jostle to snap a photograph.

Yes please, Volkswagen - The ID. Buggy is a concept car that should see the light

• VW is toying with the idea to reproduce an electric Buggy.

• The ID. Buggy is still a concept vehicle.

• Because it's niche, VW could allow start-ups to produce the ID. Buggy.

But could it work?

I guess this is the big question around the ID. Buggy: Whether there is a market for it. What we do know is that the demand for adventure vehicles is a healthy one. The Suzuki Jimny, Jeep Wrangler, and Mahindra Thar are evidence of that. That should be an indication for Volkswagen that, despite lower sales volumes, there is a definite market for these vehicles.

However, the ID. Buggy is an electric vehicle. While it embraces the concept of adventure, it does its part to take 'give back' to mother nature. This could be one of the significant marketing advantages VW has with this new vehicle, but there is one massive hurdle to overcome: the ID. Buggy is very niche.

Though the automaker is gradually expanding its ID family, it will focus on more mainstream offerings like the ID.4; vehicles that'll be mass-produced. The ID. Buggy, it will be sold in limited numbers if it should go into production.

However, Volkswagen says there is an opportunity for external manufacturers to build the ID. Buggy, as start-ups can produce it "in a wide variety of versions." If it does come to this, expect the Buggy to make a welcome return to the market.

 
Sorry, folks: Volkswagen's dune buggy project is dead in the water

Remember the Volkswagen ID Buggy concept revealed back in March 2019? Well, the German firm has confirmed we won’t see a production model.

VW CEO Ralf Brandstätter told Autocar the company had abandoned its plans to build a series-production version of the little electric buggy.

“No, we won’t do this car. We had a partner, but in the end it didn’t work out,” Brandstätter said.

As Autocar points out, German company e.Go Mobile had initially agreed a deal with VW to build the vehicle but is now “battling bankruptcy proceedings”.

The concept featured a lithium-ion battery integrated into the floor, supplying power to a 150 kW electric motor sited at the rear. At the reveal, VW said an additional electric motor on the front axle was “also conceivable” in order to realise all-wheel drive with an “electric propshaft”.
