New Volkswagen T-Cross 1,5 TSI R-Line: SA price and specs confirmed!

Volkswagen South Africa has confirmed local pricing for its new T-Cross 1,5 TSI R-Line flagship variant, which comes in from R403 500.

At launch in September 2019, the local T-Cross range comprised just two variants, both offering 85 kW: the 1,0 TSI Comfortline DSG and the aforementioned 1,0 TSI Highline DSG.

Now, however, the turbocharged 1,5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine has officially joined the line-up, sending 110 kW and 250 N.m (the latter from 1 500 to 3 500 r/min) to the front axle via a seven-speed dual clutch transmission.

Pricing:

Volkswagen T-Cross 1,0 TSI Comfortline: R353 700
Volkswagen T-Cross 1,0 TSI Highline: R385 500
Volkswagen T-Cross 1,5 TSI R-Line: R403 500

That's a lot of money for what is basically a polo on stilts. And while it looks goo din certain colours, that is horrendously priced.

Volkswagen T-Cross: entry-level variants to launch in SA in August

Volkswagen South Africa has confirmed the arrival of its entry-level T-Cross variants has been pushed back to August 2020.

Of course, since launch in September 2019, the local line-up has been limited to a pair of derivatives (Comfortline and Highline, with the option of an R-Line package) each powered by an 85 kW 1,0 TSI engine mated to the front axle via a seven-speed DSG.

An entry-level Trendline variant with VW’s familiar 1,0 TSI unit detuned to 70 kW (and fitted with a manual gearbox) was originally scheduled to touch down in the second quarter of 2020 but the COVID-19 pandemic has seemingly caused a delay. Now, however, the Wolfsburg-based firm says this base model will hit the market in August 2020.

VW SA earlier promised the Trendline variant would sport a price tag below R300 000. From what we understand, the Trendline model is expected to ship standard on 16-inch steel wheels and feature the firm’s 6,5-inch “Composition Colour” infotainment system.

Volkswagen T-Cross 1.5 TSI EVO 150 R-Line 2020 UK review

Should I buy one?

The T-Cross remains a classy car in this market but the Puma recently moved the driving experience onwards, while I’ve got a soft spot for the Kia XCeed, which drives with a fine blend of comfort and engagement in its lightest-engined, small-wheeled form. Both are longer than the T-Cross – the XCeed particularly – which could be more or less appealing, depending on your outlook.

But for me, the T-Cross remains at its most compelling lower down the range than at a level that brings such competitors into the mix.

Entry-level VW T-Cross Trendline not coming anymore - here’s w

When Volkswagen South Africa launched its new T-Cross compact SUV last year the initial range offered mid-spec Comfortline and high-spec Highline derivatives, but there was also the promise that an entry-level 70kW Trendline derivative would join the range in 2020 with a price tag of under R300 000.

However, that is not happening anymore, VWSA brand head Martina Biene announced during an online media briefing on Wednesday.

A number of reasons were given, including the collapse of the rental car market which would have been a big volume driver for the new entry model. The company also wants to avoid cannibalising its locally produced Polo hatchback at a time when the passenger car market as a whole was depressed.

However, VWSA says that the introduction of a T-Cross Trendline was not off the table completely, and could join the line-up at a later stage if market conditions changed.

However, the company still plans to introduce a more affordable version of the T-Cross later this year in the form of a 1.0 TSI 70kW Comfortline model, which will slot below the current 85kW 1.0 TSI Comfortline. Pricing has yet to be announced, it will have to undercut the latter’s R374 300 price tag.

Sub-R300k no more? Volkswagen SA cancels base T-Cross Trendline variant

Volkswagen South Africa has confirmed it has scrapped plans to bring in a base Trendline version of its popular T-Cross.

Martina Biene, outgoing head of the VW brand in South Africa, confirmed the news during an online catch-up with members of the motoring media.

At the launch of the T-Cross in September 2019, the local line-up had comprised Comfortline and Highline variants (with the option of an R-Line package), each powered by an 85 kW 1,0 TSI engine mated to the front axle via a seven-speed DSG.

A flagship 1,5 TSI R-Line model is due to join the range soon, too, boasting 110 kW and 250 N.m.

VW SA had furthermore planned to bring in a pair of derivatives employing a 1,0 TSI unit detuned to 70 kW and fitted with a manual gearbox. The 1,0 TSI 70 kW Comfortline is still on the cards but the entry-level Trendline version has been cancelled.

Yet another crossover? Volkswagen teases new sub-Tiguan SUV

Think Volkswagen has enough crossovers? Well, think again. The German firm has released a fresh teaser for a new sub-Tiguan offering set to be marketed in North America.

The shadowy image shows the front end of the newcomer, which features an interesting lighting signature. VW says the official reveal will take place on 13 October.

“We’re excited to share the first glimpse of the newest member of the Volkswagen family,” said Scott Keogh, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America.

“Great things come in small packages, as Volkswagen has proven throughout the years with its iconic Beetle, Golf and Jetta. This next car will be no exception.”
