First pics are out of the new concept. Set to preview a new bakkie to be positioned just below the Amarok.

Volkswagen Tarok Concept

Volkswagen is unveiled the Tarok Concept to the world at the 2018 São Paulo International Motor Show.

The all-wheel drive all-rounder combines the progressive features of the latest generation of digitally networked SUVs with the versatility of a cleverly designed five-metre pick-up. Its innovative new features include a large variable loading area, which can be extended thanks to the folding rear panel in the spacious four-door double cab. As with the technical layout, the Volkswagen Tarok Concept has been designed from scratch down to the very last millimetre.

Volkswagen has succeeded in merging the practical advantages of the VW Tarok Concept with a lifestyle-oriented design. Klaus Bischoff, Head Designer at the Volkswagen brand, explains: "With its striking Targa-inspired roof bar, charismatic front end, three-dimensional LED lighting strip in the rear, and powerful yet stylish side panels, the Tarok Concept's expressive design makes it the first pick-up to combine the stylistic elements of an urban SUV with an authentic off-road design." Bischoff continues: "The Tarok's DNA adds an exhilarating dynamic to the segment."

One important design feature in the five-seater Volkswagen Tarok Concept is its variable loading area concept. The floor space can be extended by opening the tailgate or using the brand new mechanism that allows the bottom of the passenger cab rear panel to be folded down. As a result, drivers can also use the back of the cab to transport extra-long items. Analogous to this variability, the maximum load is correspondingly high at around one tonne.

The interior indicates a new way forward for Volkswagen in the pick-up segment, with its primarily digital design. Eye-catching elements include a colour-keyed crossbar in Cypress Metallic that stretches across the entire dash panel. This crossbar surrounds a glass-covered Infotainment system, digital air conditioning controls and a Digital Cockpit, which together form the main cockpit elements with all displays and controls on a single visual and operational axis.

The VW Tarok Concept is powered by a 1.4-litre 110 kW / 150 PS four-cylinder TSI engine, which can be driven in Brazil as a TotalFlex Fuel Unit both with pure ethanol (E100) as well as a gasoline-ethanol blend (E22). The TSI engine in the Tarok Concept is also combined with a 6-speed automatic gearbox and permanent 4MOTION all-wheel drive.

It is certain that Volkswagen will soon be offering a series version of the Volkswagen Tarok Concept on the market in Brazil, with barely any changes. The avant-garde pick-up also has the potential to boost Volkswagen's model range in other global markets. The future series model will start out with a 2.0-litre turbo diesel direct injection (TDI) TSI engine that also delivers 110 kW / 150 PS.

Volkswagen Tarok concept: baby double-cab bakkie revealed!

Volkswagen has taken the wraps off its new Tarok concept at the São Paulo International Motor Show, with the show vehicle previewing a fresh-faced baby double-cab bakkie set to be positioned just below the Amarok.

The all-wheel-drive pick-up rides on the VW Group’s MQB platform, measures around five metres long (for context, the Amarok is 5 254 mm in length) and has a maximum load of “around one tonne”. That makes it quite a bit larger than, for example, Renault’s Duster Oroch (4 693 mm long).

VW says “it is certain” that a production version of the Tarok concept will soon be offered in Brazil “with barely any changes”. The brand furthermore adds the bakkie also “has the potential to boost Volkswagen’s model range in other global markets”.

The Wolfsburg-based brand says the unibody concept features a “large variable loading area”, which can be extended thanks to a folding rear panel. The floor space can be lengthened by opening the tailgate or using a mechanism that allows the bottom of the passenger cab rear panel to be folded down (you essentially temporarily sacrifice the rear seats).

Inside, you’ll find a colour-coded crossbar in Cypress Metallic that stretches across the entire facia and surrounds a glass-covered infotainment system, digital air-conditioning controls and digital cockpit.

The Tarok concept is powered by a 1,4-litre four-cylinder TSI engine churning out 110 kW and mated to all four corners (4Motion permanent all-wheel drive is offered) via a six-speed automatic transmission. Production models, though, will start out with a 2,0-litre turbodiesel unit also worth 110 kW.

“With its striking targa-inspired roof bar, charismatic front end, three-dimensional LED lighting strip in the rear, and powerful yet stylish side panels, the Tarok concept’s expressive design makes it the first pick-up to combine the stylistic elements of an urban SUV with an authentic off-road design,” said Klaus Bischoff, head designer at Volkswagen. “The Tarok’s DNA adds an exhilarating dynamic to the segment.”

The Tarok concept follows the Atlas Tanoak concept, a unibody pick-up revealed at the New York International Auto Show in March 2018.

Volkswagen Tarok Concept Previews Baby Amarok

Volkswagen has unveiled the Tarok Concept at the 2018 São Paulo International Motor Show, in Brazil. Does this concept preview a smaller-than-Amarok bakkie?

This Volkswagen Tarok concept is built on the MQB platform, which underpins the likes of the Audi A3, Volkswagen Polo and Golf, as well as the Tiguan. Volkswagen claims that it will be building a production version of this, "with barely any changes", which gives us a great look at the next generation of Volkswagen design language.

In terms of powertrain, the Volkswagen Tarok Concept is powered by a 1.4-litre TSI motor with 110 kW. Unique to the South American market is the variety of fuels and the Tarok can run on pure ethanol (E100) as well as a blend of petrol and ethanol (E22). This engine is mated to a permanent 4Motion all-wheel drive via a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Also on the cards is a 2.0-litre turbo diesel direct injection TDI motor which has 110 kW on tap.

One interesting design feature in the five-seater Volkswagen Tarok Concept is its variable loading area. The floor space can be extended by opening the tailgate or using the brand new mechanism that allows the bottom of the passenger cab rear panel to be folded down. As a result, drivers can also use the back of the cab to transport extra-long items. The maximum load capacity sits around the one-ton mark.

Brazil is a pivotal pickup truck market for Volkswagen which already has both ends of the market covered with the Polo-based Saveiro and the Amarok. This new model slots neatly between the two. With the German company’s other recent pickup concept, the Tanoak, also a dead-cert for production, Volkswagen really is making a bid for global bakkie glory.

What is the likelihood of the newcomer being made available in South Africa in future, however?

When asked for comment, Andile Dlamini (Head of Group Communications at Volkswagen SA) told Cars.co.za the bakkie would, in all likelihood, be produced for left-hand-drive South American markets, if not exclusively for Brazil. Once the vehicle is unveiled in production form, feasibility studies will be conducted to determine the viability of producing it for export to right-hand-drive markets. It goes without saying that should the production version of this concept be available in RHD, and VWSA could make a business case for its introduction, its arrival cannot be ruled out.

Trendsetting Tarok: VW reveals compact bakkie concept

In the space below Amarok there will soon be a bakkie called Tarok, and the concept you see here, just revealed at the Sao Paulo Motor Show, will spawn a production model with “barely any changes”.

The Tarok will initially go on sale in Brazil, but Volkswagen also states that it has the potential to boost its model range in other global markets. At this stage there has been no confirmation of whether it will be offered in South Africa, but it would undoubtedly be a natural fit.

Like the now-scarce half-tonne bakkies that South Africans have come to know and love over the years, the Tarok is a unibody pick-up, but it will be a larger and more expensive offering.

At this stage VW is only mentioning a double cab but don’t be surprised if a single cab emerges at a later stage to supplement or replace the Brazilian Saveiro range.

The Tarok will be built on VW’s modular MQB platform. In this guise it has been stretched to a five-metre length, and designers have come up with some innovative solutions for extending the load bay. Owners can tumble the back seats and then fold the lower rear cab panel forward, while the tailgate can also form an extension on the other end.

With all that in place the Tarok has a loading area that’s more than 1.8 metres in length and in weight terms it can also reportedly put up with a tonne.

The compact bakkie is also likely to set some design trends in the bakkie world, its ‘Targa bar’ C-pillar design almost certain to prove a hit.

The double cab concept is powered by a version of VW’s 1.4-litre turbopetrol engine, producing 110kW, and mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox and 4Motion all-wheel-drive. The production model will also offer the option of a 110kW 2-litre TDI turbodiesel, with other variants and drive configurations likely joining the line-up at a later stage.
