I had this interesting discussion with a friend yesterday.

A female friend of his had an argument with her parents so she packed her bags and left. 22 years old at the time.

That's quite normal, right? Except this happened in 2013! Her number stopped working that day and she stopped posting on social media and made no contact with anybody since then.

I asked him, surely she's dead by now? He told me they've been looking in prisons, hospitals morgues, not a trace. They even periodically check whether she'd left the country and can't find any record either.

So I looked up her profile on FB and the only posts are from other people asking her to please go home, so clearly people, after 9 years, still thinks she's somewhere out there. Especially her mother.

Have any of you ever experienced (or done) something like this? Go as far as legally change your name to spice things up?

There was a British guy in town who had walked out on his family in the UK years ago. He changed his name and headed over here. He lived quite peacefully until there was some altercation over a woman which ended up with the cops involved and his fingerprints being sent back to the UK. It was the talk of the town over here for ages and I still think about it when I drive past the house he used to live in.

I never thought people actually walk out on their loved ones. I actually thought my friend was making it up which is why I asked him for her name and surname to see if she's active on SM. After a while I found her. No activity since 2013. It's the most bizarre thing I've come across in some time.

I just find it very hard for her to still be alive after 9 years with no contact with anybody.

I was friendly with a girl who's father had drowned at sea. They never found his body.

20 YEARS after he went missing and was presumed dead she heard from him.

He had changed his name and was living in another country.

I know of a few who disappeared. Two are probably dead and of those the one has rumours that his family were involved. One other guy disappeared and turned up somewhere living in the streets making a living as a car guard. Guy used to be very fat and the street life made his lose all that weight. He returned home briefly but didn't like it so returned to the streets (5 hours from home). This latter dude struggled to fit in due to his weight and being bullied a bit. Just never recovered even into adult life it seems where he didn't work and felt a failure.

Yeah, I couldn't understand it either as my son had just been born and could never imagine just leaving my family like he did. But I learned it's a pretty common thing, especially in some South East Asian countries. Loads of dudes running away from family, debts or crimes and making new lives for themselves over there with new identities.
