Volunteering Abroad

Have any of you done it? I've been considering it for a while but decided to read up a bit first and seems that it causes more harm than good. And yes, I do volunteer work locally too

I once wanted to go to Sri Lanka to work at an elephant orphanage as a volunteer. I thought washing elephants and working with the mahouts was very romantic

It was run by British folks and they charged approx R20 000 for the 'privilige' to work there :erm:
